Actually, it turns out that I've been wrong with regards to licensing a
specification - the Flash formats have been licensed in such a way, that
anyone could write a program that generated swf files, but implementing a
player was restricted. Not that this applies to the AIML specification. I
still have a lot to learn :-(

Incidentally, this is what I am working on:
But of course, the AIML documentation contains lots of helpful ideas.
>
> Generally, I think that saying that "AIML is GPLed" is not really
> appropriate, because the GPL is only applicable to software - a concrete
> implementation. The -idea- of AIML as a language and the algorithms used
> probably aren't even licensable - patentable at most (and if there were some
> patents associated with AIML, which to my best knowledge are none, then you
> could license the right to implement those patents).
>
> What is licensable are the various implementations (like Program D,
> Pandorabots...) and each program has it's own license (but nothing prevents
> you to write your own). What is also licensable is the text of the
> specification itself - but very probably not using the GPL (whose terms are
> applicable only to sofware), but more likely something like the GFDL or
> Creative Commons - but again this only applies to the text of the
> specification, not to the ideas contained therein (unless they are patended,
> which they aren't).
>
> So, to sum it up - AIML is not protected by any patents (in fact, the ALICE
> AI Foundation is more or less opposed to software patents, see
> http://www.alicebot.org/patents.html ), and I don't even think that the AIML
> acronym or "alicebot" are registered trademarks. So, even though the GPL
> isn't IMHO aplicable to the specification, AIML is for all practical
> purposes unencumbered by any intellectual property rights.

In the event that you are designing and programming a new AIML
interpretation engine completely from scratch then I think - emphasis on
this word - you will be free to do with the code of your engine as you
please. I.e. distribute it under any licence you wish.

That said, I am no Intellectual Property lawyer and I can give you no
guarantees on this. The concept of AIML is protected under the GPL, which
you would be able to recognize in a Help file and by supplying a copy of the
GNU Public Licence. If you plan on making a living out of distributing this
engine to other parties then you may want to consult an IP lawyer for this.
The investment you make here will be worth it.

Now, the topic of GPL has come across a couple of times and when you look in
the archives you will find a large number of posts. Keep in mind that these
posts will refer to version 2 of this licence.

Hi Lipska,

I'm not sure what you mean about the carriage return occurring in the
web interface output. Carriage returns are whitespace in HTML, and the
usual handling of whitespace in HTML is to reduce it to a single space,
unless you specify otherwise with css (or use elements like <pre> that
preserve whitespace as-is by default). What does the HTML source look
like for the response?

If I can, I'll try this out myself, but it may be a while....
>
> Thanks very much for the reply. I have tried it on the java console
> interface and on the web interface with the same results. Just a note the
> AIML file I attached does not cause this to happen but if its edited and a
> carriage return is placed under TESTTWO ( as below) it occurs.
>>> Hi All,
>>>
>>> I am hoping someone can give me advice regarding the issue I am
>>> experiencing. I wrote AIML for one of the old programD interfaces (
>>> 4.1.*)
>>> couple of years ago. I have now upgraded to the new programd 4.6 and have
>>> experienced a number of issues regarding whitespace/carriage returns.
>>>
>>> I am not sure if these are related to my incorrect usage of AIML, missing
>>> settings or perhaps something else.
>>>
>>> I have a number of examples of what happens
>>>
>>> Case 1
>>> Consider the below extract of AIML
>>>
>>> <category>
>>> <pattern>TESTONE</pattern>
>>> <template>
>>> hello <srai>TESTTWO</srai>
>>> </template>
>>> </category>
>>>
>>> <category>
>>> <pattern>TESTTWO</pattern>
>>> <template>
>>> Right here
>>> </template>
>>> </category>
>>>
>>> When I type TESTONE it should print out hello and the process TESTTWO
>>> i.e. I
>>> would expect it to print out
>>> hello Right here
>>>
>>> Instead it puts a carriage return in outputting the below
>>> hello
>>> Right here
>>>
>>> Now I am able to correct this by changing the AIML under TESTTWO to have
>>> the
>>> template all on one line
>>>
>>> <category>
>>> <pattern>TESTTWO</pattern>
>>> <template>Right here</template>
>>> </category>
>>>
>>> This outputs
>>> hello Right here
>>>
>>> I have lots and lots of AIML that is written in the previous form and
>>> this
>>> would mean hours of work to fix. I realise this is probably related to
>>> some
>>> new interpretation in progamd 4.6 of carriage returns i.e. they are
>>> included
>>> as part of the content. Is there any easy way I can switch this off
>>>
>>> Any help would be greatly appreciated
>>>
>>>
>>> Example of actual AIML file
>>> http://www.nabble.com/file/p16930873/sample1.aiml sample1.aiml

But what if someone were to implement AIML from scratch from the AIML
spec. Are there any IP issues then? That is, does AIML itself have
any IP protection or only its implementation?
I need help. I recently started working on AIML. Can you please tell me how I can make the bot pause for a second during its reply.i.e. in between of its reply.

The bot that I am working on, replies very fast.

Thank you.

I am hoping someone can give me advice regarding the issue I am experiencing. I wrote AIML for one of the old programD interfaces ( 4.1.*) couple of years ago. I have now upgraded to the new programd 4.6 and have experienced a number of issues regarding whitespace/carriage returns.

I am not sure if these are related to my incorrect usage of AIML, missing settings or perhaps something else.

I have a number of examples of what happens

Case 1
Consider the below extract of AIML

<category>
<pattern>TESTONE</pattern>
<template>
hello <srai>TESTTWO</srai>
</template>
</category>

<category>
<pattern>TESTTWO</pattern>
<template>
Right here
</template>
</category>

When I type TESTONE it should print out hello and the process TESTTWO i.e. I would expect it to print out
hello Right here

Instead it puts a carriage return in outputting the below
hello
Right here

Now I am able to correct this by changing the AIML under TESTTWO to have the template all on one line

<category>
<pattern>TESTTWO</pattern>
<template>Right here</template>
</category>

This outputs
hello Right here

I have lots and lots of AIML that is written in the previous form and this would mean hours of work to fix. I realise this is probably related to some new interpretation in progamd 4.6 of carriage returns i.e. they are included as part of the content. Is there any easy way I can switch this off

Any help would be greatly appreciated

Example of actual AIML file
sample1.aiml

Kind regards

Thanks very much for the reply. I have tried it on the java console interface and on the web interface with the same results. Just a note the AIML file I attached does not cause this to happen but if its edited and a carriage return is placed under TESTTWO ( as below) it occurs.

What user interface are you using? Web interface, IM, ....?

> Hi All,
>
> I am hoping someone can give me advice regarding the issue I am
> experiencing. I wrote AIML for one of the old programD interfaces ( 4.1.*)
> couple of years ago. I have now upgraded to the new programd 4.6 and have
> experienced a number of issues regarding whitespace/carriage returns.
>
> I am not sure if these are related to my incorrect usage of AIML, missing
> settings or perhaps something else.
>
> I have a number of examples of what happens
>
> Case 1
> Consider the below extract of AIML
>
> <category>
> <pattern>TESTONE</pattern>
> <template>
> hello <srai>TESTTWO</srai>
> </template>
> </category>
>
> <category>
> <pattern>TESTTWO</pattern>
> <template>
> Right here
> </template>
> </category>
>
> When I type TESTONE it should print out hello and the process TESTTWO i.e. I
> would expect it to print out
> hello Right here
>
> Instead it puts a carriage return in outputting the below
> hello
> Right here
>
> Now I am able to correct this by changing the AIML under TESTTWO to have the
> template all on one line
>
> <category>
> <pattern>TESTTWO</pattern>
> <template>Right here</template>
> </category>
>
> This outputs
> hello Right here
>
> I have lots and lots of AIML that is written in the previous form and this
> would mean hours of work to fix. I realise this is probably related to some
> new interpretation in progamd 4.6 of carriage returns i.e. they are included
> as part of the content. Is there any easy way I can switch this off
>
> Any help would be greatly appreciated
>
>
> Example of actual AIML file
> http://www.nabble.com/file/p16930873/sample1.aiml sample1.aiml
>
> Kind regards
>

Hello to the Alice Community!

I'm having a busy time here, so I'll probably remain a quiet reader of the lists for another while.
But I'd still like to announce that the official GermanAlice is back online and hosted at pandorabots. I couldn't resist giving the system a try, so I'll evaluate the logs from time to time and add some more content to the rather crude standard categories in German...I told you I missed the coding ;-)

The bot is accessible via http://www.drossmann.de

Furthermore, I'd just like to inform you that a German guy developed a Skype-plugin for Alice-E. You can find it at http://blog.kevinkempfer.de/2008/02/12/alice4skype-ist-da/

The page is in German, but the download links are almost at the top of the page where you will find the hyperlinked words "Windows" and "Linux"...those link to the respective versions..

again, please do not try to contact me via this old and disused address (I'm just too lazy to change the list's settings...), but via christian [at] drossmann [dot] de
So that I fixed the file and share it here for other users like me :D

But now comes my question: how can we change it to use php and not javascript? I mean, I want the result to be returned as value and not as javascript code.
The reason I ask for this is because I export the database messages into html logs for archive purposes, and from there, I want to convert them on-the-fly to pdf, for users downloads. Even in the html exported file, the java part goes broken, maybe due to the slashes not being stripped as they should, but anyway, i don't want javascript to be saved in log files. Not to talk about the further export to pdf... which of course won't work this way.
Does anyone have another solution for this?

PS: This is my first post, so I hope the attachment is working ;)
IT pioneer Joseph Weizenbaum dies

Christoph Hammerschmidt
(03/07/2008 4:35 AM EST)

MUNICH, Germany × Computer pioneer and philosopher Joseph Weizenbaum (85)
has died in Berlin. The scientist and MIT professor emeritus was known for
his critical position towards the impact of information technology to
society.
Born in Berlin to Jewish parents, Weizenbaum had emigrated in 1936 to the
United States. After having contributed to the development of the first
analog computers and participating in the design of the first digital
computers for banking applications, Weizenbaum in 1963 took a position at
the Massachussetts Institute of Technology (MIT); from 1970 he was
professor for computer science. Among his major achievements were studies
over the SLIP programming language and research on basic software
technologies which today are in widespread use such as garbage collection
algorithms.

One of his most influential works was the development of the natural
language processor ELIZA which is said to be one of the early
breakthroughs for Artificial Intelligence. In this context, he developed a
program simulating a conversation between a physician and a patient.

Shocked over the fact that many test series participants were unable to
determine they in fact were communicating with a computer and openly
divulged most intimate details of their life, Weizenbaum developed a more
critical and reserved posture towards information technologies and turned
into an inconvenient admonisher. He co-founded the Computer Professionals
for Social Responsibility group. Until his death, he also was Chairman of
the Scientific Institute of Electronic Business in Berlin.

In 1996, Weizenbaum moved to Berlin. On March 5, he died in consequence of
apoplexy.

> We are also looking at building our own java api to facilitate this
> since there are many projects out there that look to have started down
> the Java XMPP trail, but, as you found, there seems to be a stoppage in
> development.

Yes, I'm not sure why? It's seems the most logical way to interact with
a bot. Good luck. I'm waiting with baited breath.
Onderwerp: [alicebot-general] assistance with an AIML idea

Hi,
Im using python for my bots that use AIML and I was wondering about
something. I usually keep logs of what my bot says and its responses from
other people. Now what Im thinking is having another python script that goes
through these responses and generate or update its current AIML markups
based on reversing the roles of responses and the statements by and from the
responder (does this make sense?)
For example if someone asked if today is sunday and the bot's response is
that it doesnt know and the responder tells it to ignore it. The script will
update the AIML so that if someone tells the bot that they dont know what
day it is today, the bot will tell them to ignore it.

Has this been done before? Im just thinking in a very general manner here,
im sure there are alot of ways in which this can be improved.
Any comments or thoughts or obstacles with this aside from the obvious
overfitting/overspecialized AIML; but I intend to counter this with more
general chats.
Cheers

Look at the pandora tutorial at:

http://www.pandorabots.com/botmaster/en/tutorial?ch=1

That shows some concrete examples with graphs that
help out when looking at the pattern matching
algorithm.

> "Try all remaining
> suffixes of the input
> following "X" to see if one matches".

It states in the document that X is:
(a) an input starting with word "X"

So X is just a word that's part of the user's input.

So if you read as part of the algorithm:
----
Does the Nodemapper contain the key "_"? If so, search
the subgraph rooted at the child node linked by "_".
Try all remaining suffixes of the input following "X"
to see if one matches. If no match was found, try:
----

That means start with the first word following "_" and
continue.

If you find in your tree "_" you start with that and
continue with the rest of your user's input to see if
one matches a <pattern>.

For example if you had:

<category>
<pattern>_ how are you</pattern>
<template>
good
</template>
</category>

And the input was:

"Hello how are you"

You would start at "_" and try and match "how" then
"are" and finally "you" and spit out "good"

If the input was:

"Hello how are me"

It would start at "_" and try and match "how" then
"are" but not match "me" to "you" and not match at
all.

It's difficult but read through it a few times and
it'll eventually gel.

--- musky <muskvar@...> wrote:
>
> i am a bit confused as to how ALICE does her pattern
> matching.
> I went through the pattern matching page in
> alicebot.org where the matching
> process is compared to searching for a file in the
> file system,i did not
> understand what is meant by:"Try all remaining
> suffixes of the input
> following "X" to see if one matches".
>
> can someone explain the matching will an example.
>
> also why is alice's brain like a spiral.it says that
> the root itself is the
> spiral but isnt the root supposed to be just one
> node?
>
