Air filtration

Hi all,

I had to do away with my OEM, in the side-box air filter because my
Dell'Orto carb runs too rich for it.  I am in the range without it
that I can tune the carb, before I couldn't lean it out enough.  Have
read that K & N air filters may allow through too much dust, et.  We
don't really have much of a dust problem here, at least not in recent
years with so much rain, but I'm thinking about making a gauze holder
for the side case and just putting several layers of old T-shirt
cotton across a four inch diameter cap, over the air intake, kept
right in the side box.  And advice?  I figure maybe I can do some
testing to get the right amount of filtration by doing plug checks.  I
cn easily wash my T-shirt filter when the time comes.  I think I could
get by running it without (I am now) but maybe a little dust
protection might be good.

Anyone tried something like this>

I should think you could come up with something that will work
acceptably in your application. Oil it lightly with K&N filter oil
(chainsaw chain oil might do as well), and change crankcase oil and
filter on a frequent schedule.

I use K&Ns on several bikes including my Bullet:

I've used them for years with no problems. You can search sizes here:

Uni Filter also offer a range of good filters, I use them too:

Thanks for the links, Rick - maybe the t-shirt idea might be good
(have some chain saw oil) until I can order something in.  I had
anticipated putting the gauze between two small sheets of bronze windo
screen.  K & N makes DU-0100 which is an exact replacement.  There is
an S & B filter I looked catalog specs up on that can have the same
internal diameter but a smaller external one, but also with the three
inch height, which might work well.  I plan to change the crankase oil
every thousand miles, at least six months of riding.
