APT::Cache-LimitHi all,
I just gave a first shot at remastering the shiny new Knoppix 5.3. The very first thing I run into was a cryptic error message when calling "apt-get update" in the chroot environment: "Dynamic MMap ran out of room" Great. I am a very long time Linux user and I needed Google to understand the problem and find the solution. My attempt at translating the original riddle to human English language is "The apt cache limit is too low". I solved the problem by doubling the value of "APT::Cache-Limit" in /etc/apt/apt.conf. Klaus, maybe you can fix this before releasing the 5.3 download version so that Dynamic MMap gets as much room as it wants to occupy? I wonder why we did not notice this problem on our mastering system. :-/ And why does apt-get use a static memory size instead of allocating space dynamically? > Klaus, maybe you can fix this before releasing the 5.3 download version so > that Dynamic MMap gets as much room as it wants to occupy? Done, I doubled the value as you recommended. Regards -Klaus -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-knoppix-request@... with a subject of "unsubscribe". Trouble? Contact listmaster@... |

Update on Knoppix 5.3.1 statusHi,
To avoid speculations about too much delay again (again, I apologize for last year's unavailability), here is our TODO list between Cebit and the Knoppix 5.3.1 release for which we have an internal release date of "not later than 22.3.2008". - Fix speech plugin for ADRIANE: DONE. - Fix detection of vfat filesystem in /etc/fstab: DONE. - Package updates in order to get orca to speak in german, too: DONE. - Fix annoying "out of room for mmap" apt-get update error: DONE. - Add missing firmware for ipw3x driver: DONE. - Kernel update: In progress. - Bugfixes and enhancements for screenreader in close cooperation with sbl author Marco Skambraks: In progress. - Fix knoppix-terminalserver: In progress - Fix knoppix-installer and 0wn for new boot method: Almost done. - Complete/fix a few ADRIANE components: Almost done. - KDE4 bugs: WONTFIX. (Remaining an experimental boot option) - CD version and dedicated ADRIANE boot CD (or a patch program that turns the Knoppix CD into an ADRIANE CD with immediate speech support): Not started yet, probably after release date of DVD. With kind regards -Klaus -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-knoppix-request@... with a subject of "unsubscribe". Trouble? Contact listmaster@... |

I would like to join in the choir. Thank you very much for all the work and energy you have put into this project and for actually listening to complaints and bug reports. Re: Update on Knoppix 5.3.1 statusPsst... Hey Count...
IMO... The last Knoppix was the greatest yet. (I am sure that disappoints some people though.) What disappointment are you speaking of? If you think Knoppix has a few wrinkles... have a look at Vista's troubles. http://weblog.infoworld.com/save-xp/ LOL On 3/17/08, Count Of Dracula <countofdracula@...> wrote: > > > > > Is that... new boot method... or New Boot Method? > > Sounds interesting. I was hoping for Knoppix version of CeBIT 2007 like everyone else.That did not happen just that. However, I do feel the need to overhaul menu system for easy navigation of vast amount of programs. I owe Klaus a debt of gratitude I will never be able to repay. After 5.3.1 is released maybe he'll address the 5.2 issue. I was able to get 5.2 as a torrent download from somewhere... but I never felt compelled to leave 5.1.1 for it. Running VirtualBox in Knoppix 5.1.1 was enough for me. Knowing I can just fire up a XPbox will give me enough piece of mind for the foreseeable future. Microsoft can drive off a cliff and I could care less. http://www.knoppix.net/forum/viewtopic.php?t=28591 best regards, john > However, I do feel the need to overhaul menu system for easy > navigation of vast amount of programs. > > Knopper is a great person and fantastic enginner.Knoppix is > responsible for unleashing Live CD rush > ditto! -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-knoppix-request@... with a subject of "unsubscribe". Re: Update on Knoppix 5.3.1 statusHi,
The 5.3.1 image is available via rsync from ftp.uni-kl.de, and via torrent first, to cut down excessive load while it's being distributed to the main mirrors. I'm going to put up hardlinks on the ftp and http directories tonight. And I still need to write a changelog entry and an announcement, just letting you know that it's already released, inofficially. ;-) Regards -Klaus Knopper -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-knoppix-request@... with a subject of "unsubscribe". Re: Update on Knoppix 5.3.1 statusHello all,
The latest Knoppix, the 5.3.1 DVD, is currently downloading here ;-) Thank you Klaus. Here's a question: I am used to remastering the CD version, but not the DVD one. Is a CD version planned? If so, when? If not, is it possible to remaster the DVD as easily than the CD version? The official Knoppix Remastering Howto does not seem to list any big difference (except the KNOPPIX2 file): http://www.knoppix.net/wiki/Knoppix_Remastering_Howto Thanks Yann -- Kaella : http://kaella.linux-azur.org/ : Knoppix in French -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-knoppix-request@... with a subject of "unsubscribe".
