Hi Charlie,

I wouldn't be surprised about Geronimo. It and Glassfish are probably
the most up to date and actively developed servers.

I don't want to start a server war, so I just want to point out some
facts about WebSphere, and let everyone draw their own conclusions. Before
the facts, though:

First, I have a good bit of empirical evidence that many systems out
there are running pre-6.0 versions of WAS.

Second, I said in an earlier email that "I don't use JSP." That's true
on projects where I get to specify the technology. I have a large client
that uses JSP on WAS 6.0. I sort of hold my nose and relearn old technology
when I have to work on it. WAS is stable, except for going off on memory
allocation under gc stress.

The facts:

Now, keep in mind that Sun naturally has a head start on other JVM
implementations.

Still, look at WAS release dates under "WebSphere compatibility matrix"

Now, as advertised, I'll let you draw your own conclusions about the
survey validity and relevance.

Never used websphere,

Geronimo was a headache on my last project. We switched from apache/tomcat to Geronimo for legal reasons not technical. Geronimo was too easy to break and didn’t run on Solaris.

I think this is a self-inflicted wound. I don't use JSP, but setting up
one and leaving the name to "index.jsp" (notice the "i" is lower case as
standard,) it worked. Changing to uppercase "I" caused a failure. I
suspect the handling of files named "index" is a special case.

I'd suggest deleting the project and starting again, with names as
noted.

Gary,

Along with creating your Dynamic Web project did you create an Enterprise Application component? I noticed a few times with the new Eclipse that sometimes to effectively run a Dyna-Web-Proj you have to create this separately. Along with a descriptor you will need an "application.xml" file. These are held in the Enterprise Application component.

Gary,

Right click on your jsp file and click Run As -> Run on Server to launch that particular jsp file and then you can avoid having to configure the welcome-file-list while you are troubleshooting the problem.

If I were you I would use Tomcat and not a full blown app server (assuming you are not using anything that requires it). It will be faster to deploy, consume less memory, and help you focus on configuring the web tier and not have all the other confusing stuff around it. Just a quick suggestion.

I can't be of much help there, except to say that "dynamic", "java",
and "web app" are words I rarely use in the same sentence. :-)

Help me start my Dynamic Web App!

Hello all:

I'm a Java newbie here attempting to run a simple Dynamic Web project in Eclipse. Here's what I have done:

Downloaded and installed Apache Geronimo v2.1 server.
In Eclipse, created a new Dynamic Web project
Created a simple index.jsp file which now sits in the WebContent folder of the project.
Started the server and published everything.

When I right-click on the project and select RunAs -> Run on Server, the "Status" column of the Server window first shows "publishing" then shows "Synchronized", but my index.jsp does not display.

I must be missing something somewhere. Do I need some kind of deployment descriptor file perhaps?

Please show this newbie the error of his ways.

JFreeChart is pretty nice for being OSS.
We've used it.

Google's Chart API can do a lot of what JFreeChart does with a simpler API.

amCharts is Flash based and can be effectively used free if you don't mind their link being on the chart...

If you can float a little dough though, I highly recommend the "Flashy" FusionCharts.
We got our client to buy it and it makes for much slicker charts and some pretty slick features and excellent documentation

Hi Chris - take a look at JGraphT :: http://jgrapht.sourceforge.net/ [or gef]. I'm not sure if you need something that will run in all browsers/will be interactive -- but I do have to give a one and a half thumbs up to developing interactive interfaces in flex. It's fairly easy to get started in, the data transfer between your app is fairly easy [I did mean using struts and xml]

a neat graphing demo to look at (though not quite oss, you get the idea)

has support for directed and undirected graphs [great if you have uni directional traffic] and different edge options / weights (for your different connection speeds)
