I just finished watching a documentary called "Favela Rising" directed by Jeff Zimbalist and Matt Mochary.
The movie tracks the brief history of the favelas of Rio and the grass roots effort to combat the violence through organized cultural activities aimed at the youth (batucada, dance, capoeira etc).

This film was just the "tip of the iceberg", when it comes to showing the depth of the issues surrounding poverty in Brazil...but it had great music and I would recommend it to all of my fellow capoeirista's.

You know you're a capoeirista when:

1) after setting up all your dj equipment you sing Puxada De Rede to test the mic and speakers
2) every time you see a cop Cavalaria starts playing in your head
3) every open grass area you come accross you feel a strange urge to do a Mortal or Folha Seca on it
4) you go into watermellon music just to play Maculele on the congas for like 5 minutes straight and then leave lol
5) you meet someone at a club/bar who knows capoeira and you leave for 20-30 minutes to go play a few games. Then return to the club/bar only to get asked why you're so sweaty and tired haha.

lol soo it seems that i just noticed i'm dangerously obsess with capoeira... E.G. practicing 6 hours a week at the studio plus some unknown hours at home, lets just say 8. (14 hours a week...)...

you know you're a capoeira when you/I...

-i'm hurting myself everyday trying new moves
-waiting in the cafe by the studio every day at 3 pm everyday... (lmao!)
-asking galego almost everyday about the intermediate class lmao!
-taking yoga classes
-eating candy to stay awake just to do a queda de rins
- trying to learn how to play the berimbau off of youtube and by watching brett play
- can't sleep without doing a push up....
-when you can't sleep you decide to do some mea lua de campasso! (sp?) (i actually suffer from sleep deprivation, i can't sleep the normally recommend amount of hours..)
- doing head spins at work

wow.... theres more of my list of symptoms can go on for miles!

So, this is from a conversation I had with a friend a couple of weeks ago...I'd like to see what you all have to add to it. Just complete the sentence, "You know you're a capoeirista if..."

-You have road rage fantasies that end with a well timed martelo or bensao...(no, really...)
-You not only sing capoeira songs, but you also practice your ginga...in the shower.
-You've ever thrown kicks over the chairs at your work.
-Someone asks you what you want for your birthday, and 4 of the 5 things that come to mind are capoeira related in some way.
-Every time you open your mouth to speak your friends ask "is this going to be another Capoeira thing?"
-Instead of taking notes in class, you are drawing little figures doing aus and meia lua de compassos
-You walk around bare-foot to "Toughen up your feet"
-You find yourself doing the ginga while playing with the neighbor's dog
-You start every sentence with "this one time... at capoeira..."
-Try to study and all i can think about is how i could've maneuvered better in the roda the night (or few hours) before......
-Your best friends start sounding like your girlfriend or boyfriend cause you don't spend much time with them anymore
-You desperately try to explain to your non-capoeira-playing friends that berimbau music is great
-YOU CAN'T STOP THE CAPOEIRA MUSIC IN YOUR HEAD!!!
-When you walk around in a weird limp from the skin that tore off your foot the night before, and you 're used to it...

I just want to see what you all have to add...
