64 Studio is a collection of software for digital content creation on x86_64 hardware (that's AMD's 64-bit CPUs and Intel's EM64T chips).
It's based on the pure 64 port of Debian GNU/Linux, but with a specialised package selection and lots of other customisations.
It will be marketed to hardware OEMs in the creative workstation and laptop markets as an alternative to the 64-bit version of Windows XP, or OS X on Apple hardware.
< ----------------------------------------
< Hi Mira,
<
< > I would like to suggest "jkmeter" for including in next release of 64studio.
<
< Quentin has made a package, we'll get it into the testing branch.
<
< > I would like also suggest item "meterbridge jellyfish" in Sound & Video menu.
< > I think it is very important tool for mastering to check mono stereo
< compatibility and it would be nice to get it simply from menu.
< > Commands can looks like this:
< > meterbridge -t jf alsa_pcm:playback_1 alsa_pcm:playback_2 -n PHASEmeter
< > meterbridge -t vu alsa_pcm:playback_1 alsa_pcm:playback_2 -n VUmeter
< >
< > All of them (Jkmeter, VUmeter and PHASEmeter) can be nested in some submenu
< e.g. "measurement tools" to avoid overblown Sound & Video menu.
<
< The problem with the current menu structure is that Sound & Video is a
< ridiculously broad category for what we do. Unfortunately, this
< classification is built into many Debian packages, so it's not easy to
< fix without breaking compatibility.
<
< Cheers!
<
> copy/paste from REDME file:
> "Jkmeter is a horizontal or vertical bargraph level meter based on the ideas of mastering guru Bob Katz.
> A K-meter displays both the true RMS level and the digital peak level. In this implementation the RMS meter is about 15% faster than an VU, but without the overshoot. This provides a good indication of subjective loudness."
>
>

Good idea - I like it. I used alacarte to create a jellyfish scope
entry for myself some time ago.
command: /usr/bin/meterbridge -t jf x x
This creates a jellyfish scope with 2 inputs, but not connected to
anything. You can then connect it to hardware or application of your
choosing using Jack Control (qjackctl)

I'll check out the jk meter...

The only change in qjackctl version 0.2.22-2 compared to 0.2.22-1 was to
do with window positioning, it's hard to image it could cause this
problem. However this is an old version of the package, almost 18 months
old, so we'll have to test against a current version in a beta of 64
any time soon, I think it could be useful over a local gigabit LAN. I'm
curious to see how it compares to netjack.

I noticed the same group has produced a Jack connections save/restore tool:
When I run jackd from the 64studio version of qjackctl, jackd crashes
either straight after starting, or within 5-10 minutes, with the following
error in the log:

{{{
cannot read result for request type 7 from server (Broken pipe)
}}}

This does not happen when I run jackd standalone, or using the debian
stable version of qjackctl. It does happen even when qjackctl is the only
jack application running. Also note that the crash happens straight after
a midi connection graph change, which makes me think that it is a bug in
the midi subsystem of qjackctl (64studio version). I am using an M-Audio
firewire solo card, with the freebob / ffdao jack driver.

jackd is started with the following parameters:

jackd -v -R -P89 -t2000 -dfreebob -dhw:0 -r48000 -p256 -n3 -i0 -o0

This problem has also been reported in the following forum thread:

http://64studio.com/node/608

--
>>
>
>
> If you are running the gnome gui, go to:
>
> Gnome menu => Desktop => Preferences => Removable Drives and Media

Thanks, Quentin!

I never looked at that. I'm using 64Studio 2.1, running Gnome, and
nothing special other than a few packages from Etch. Just about
everything else seemed fine to me, so I never fiddled with the
preferences or even thought about it:)

Thanks again!

Hi Mike,

> is there a "formal" process
> for deciding what Debian packages get included in 64studio?

Not really, the original concept came from Free and I, and then people
in the community suggest (or argue for inclusion of) their favourites.
We do have a few ground rules though:

1. No packages with active software patent enforcement (e.g. lame). It's
a major pain, but we can't risk a lawsuit.

2. If it's not Free Software, we'll only include the package if there's
no practical alternative. Examples: alsa-firmware, flashplugin-nonfree

3. We don't include Mono, or any packages that use it, because I'm not
personally convinced of the value of it, compared with the software
patent risk of using a Microsoft technology. We don't use Java either,
because of the licensing problems with Sun's runtime environment.

> For instance,
> 'aqualung' appears to me after going through numerous exercises to be the
> most up-to-date JACK friendly, multiformat friendly audio player for Linux.

I'd agree, we're following the development of Aqualung with interest.

> How might it be considered for inclusion in the next 64studio?

Go to http://trac.64studio.com/64studio/report/3 and login with your
email address and password from the 64studio-devel list. Then click New
Ticket on the top navigation bar.

Cheers!

To build a deb file is not too difficult to do, but it is not arbitrary.
The easiest way I have found to do it, it to use a application called

It assists you in building the debianization of the package needed to

Hi Christian,

Not sure why you are using "dist-upgrade"?

If you just leave things as they are your system will
still update/upgrade ok,
but you will always see the error message.

On a default 64studio install.
This is how I got my system back to 64studio defaults.

# apt-get update
# apt-get remove qsynth
# apt-get --reinstall install 64studio-themes

# dpkg -l | grep qsynth

Will confirm qsynth is ok.

I am not sure how a dist-upgrade install will work.
you may have changed other dependencies?

From now on:

# apt-get update
# apt-get upgrade
# [no] = [n]
# apt-get install (all in upgrade list except qsynth)

Cheers!

Hi Raphael,

> For this kind of cash I'd certainly get a notebook with much
> better CPU/RAM/HD, better display and the ability to load/run quite a bit more
> stuff on it.

You could do that, but the Samsung hardware is really small and very
light, and also has a touchscreen, which is a lot of fun. It's a
different kind of product.

> On a notebook you could also run on the integrated audiochip, which
> wouldn't be worse then the Samsung chip I guess.

The Q1 Ultra uses the Intel HDA chipset, which sounds much better than
the older AC97 onboard chips. I've had the analogue out plugged into
some pretty large club sound systems, and it sounds easily good enough
for that environment.

In theory, HDA supports up to 192KHz 32-bit S/PDIF, but I haven't seen
any suitable peripherals that go up to that bitrate (yet). 24-bit is
pretty good for a mobile device though.

> Plus you get the ability to
> hook an external audiointerface (USB or Firewire) of your choice if/when needed.

The Q1 has two USB sockets, one in the top, and one in the side. Some
24-bit A/D convertor USB condenser microphones are coming onto the
market now.

Cheers!
better CPU/RAM/HD, better display and the ability to load/run quite a bit more
stuff on it. On a notebook you could also run on the integrated audiochip, which
wouldn't be worse then the Samsung chip I guess. Plus you get the ability to
hook an external audiointerface (USB or Firewire) of your choice if/when needed.

I admit it has a certain "wow" factor going for it, looks cute and probably
functions OK for it's limited CPU power.

Just MHO of course.

Cheers
