I have one from IOgear that I have had for quite some time and it has been rock solid for me both on Mac and PC platforms. http://www.iogear.com/product/GUC232A/ -- Louis Zirkel / lzirkel@... Re: 5501 USB to RS-232 Adapater.
Really, anything will work.
Don't be picky. It'll be your loss. Really most people use the same FTDI chip. Do not waste you money. Prolific is common too, there's a small bunch of others that turn up. Main thing to watch out for is to check that BREAK works if you might at some point need to send it; it's not possible with some USB/RS232 adapters, and if you might need this sometime in the future, check it out when you get it... _______________________________________________ Soekris-tech mailing list Soekris-tech@... http://lists.soekris.com/mailman/listinfo/soekris-tech |

I generally try to get ones that use the FTDI chipset. However, the main reason for that is the quality of their Windows drivers. I have no idea whether they make any difference on Unix. Have a look at these [1]. They've been around for a while and you have direct contact with the developer. I'm pretty sure they use the FTDI chipset. They have distributors around the world too. I have had the best results with the Keyspan adapters. I have had very good results them on Windows, OS X, and Linux, in fact I carry one in my bag for whenever I need a serial adapter. I'm not sure how well they work on BSD though. -Chris _______________________________________________ Soekris-tech mailing list Soekris-tech@... http://lists.soekris.com/mailman/listinfo/soekris-tech |

Depending on what you're sending the break to, you may be able to get away with setting the baud rate to something really slow (like 50 baud) and sending a single NUL. I've got some consoles on a serial interface that's slightly broken when sending breaks (software issues I haven't yet had the leisure and inclination to track down) and I've done the "speed down and send NUL" trick on a few occasions. /~\ The ASCII der Mouse \ / Ribbon Campaign X Against HTML mouse@... / \ Email! 7D C8 61 52 5D E7 2D 39 4E F1 31 3E E8 B3 27 4B _______________________________________________ Soekris-tech mailing list Soekris-tech@... http://lists.soekris.com/mailman/listinfo/soekris-tech |
