I found out I mis-spoke. The iPhone browser, Safari 3 and FF 3 all
support client-side storage.

I don't think (but don't know) that a web app can talk to the built-in apps.

You can do local storage in some web browsers, Firefox, IE7. Safari
will too, one of these days..

I was thinking of local storage preferably in the iPhone address/
phone book. I haven't gotten into the iPhone API yet, but I would
think that the API provides hooks to store and retrieve data from the
iPhone address/phone book.

Using a web app without local storage is not really an option because
of the need to access contact information when the phone is off line.

All you have to do is to set a startup method for a user and it'll be
prevented from going into user mode.
The suer should be created as an 'administrator' user, that is created
from an administrator login, not from a designer login.

This has been the standard behaviour since v3.

btw, the method does not even need to exist, all you need is something
in the startup method field.

Ah. Thanks Josh. But that is even more confusing now. I rewrote the routine
using the IC built msg, and that returns error -11004, which is similar:

-11001 Requested database information does not exist; as confirmed by an
authoritative host
-11004 Name supplied was valid but no information of the requested type
is in the database

So, I still don't know what it means or what the problem is, especially
given that both routines (QuickSend msg and Built msg) work fine on my
office workstation and the same routines work fine with v2003 in both
environments. And what is "database" in this context? One assumes the server
answers back and triggers this error msg. But it is responding differently
because of an "environment" in this case, not because of data or code
differences. In other words, it seems the msg is being sent in a different
way or a different format by v11 when it runs on XP than when it runs on
WIN2003.

I'm off by one. The log file numbers correspond the backup file number.
So if I'm restoring backup 0002, I need log file(s) that contain
0002...then I can do 0003, 0004, etc until the database is current.

Another way to say it is, when you create backup 0002, it creates
0001.4bl because database 0002 already contains the changes that are in
the current log file. The 0001.4bl file is for when you go back and
restore backup 0001.

Two new steps:

1.a Restore backed up log file [0002].4BL (you'll need this later)

2.a Choose the log file from 1.1 when you start 4D.

In actuality, if for 1.a and 2 you put everything in the same folder
(this is the default) it will use the restored log file automatically so
you can skip step 2.a. But if they're not in the same folder you have
to select it.

Sorry about that. That's what I get for going off the top of my head!

You open the oldest log file that corresponds to the backup.

Do step 3. Change "integrate" to "choose" of that makes more sense.

You may want to check out the command DRAG WINDOW

Create an invisible button,
In the button's object method type DRAG WINDOW
Make sure the "on Click" event handler is enabled for the button
Now you can drag the window by clicking-dragging the button :-)
For clarity's sake, under the invisible button, you should put a graphics
element depicting a Window's title bar :-)

Thanks for your prompt reply.

I was already thinking along those lines when I got no reply from the NUG.
But I have not had much luck figuring out how to go about it. In the
4D Design and Language References there is mention of drag and drop, but
this appears to be for dragging the contents of one object to another.
Not sure where to pursue dragging windows. Any leads? Any chance you would
be willing to share some sample code?

weeks back. If I recall, the well-known 4D wonk built an iPhone monitoring
app for Eaton (at least I think it was Eaton) that would graph machine data.

Which version of 4D are you inquiring about?

I'll withhold my comment on v11 but 2004 and earlier versions are 32bit
Applications. I am not sure how it is possible for a 32bit application to
address more memory space than it can count!

Thank you for sending that. It handles the keyboard inputs very nicely.

The other issue to tackle, is the right mouse click that displays the
process list. Contextual click and Right mouse are used with the On clicked
form event - anyone know if there is an analog for On event call?

The only other option, as I see it, is to put code in the Form method for
each output layout. Since this has 75 OPL's and 0 of them have a form
method, I think it make sense to avoid an hour of pasting in a new form
method.

On another tack - how are others of you handling this issue (pardon the
pun)? Are you using event handlers, form methods, whatever?

4D IC QuickSend Errors on v11

a v11 project that sends emails just fine using the 4D IC plugin command
SMPT_QuickSend, compiled or non-compiled, from my office workstation. But on
a production server (WIN2003) I get a -11001 error. Yet the exact same code
in a v2003 app on the same production server does fine. I DO know the v11
code is hitting the smtp server, because the response is immediate. Whereas
if I use a bogus smtp server address, there is a long wait before a timeout
error. I can't find this -11001 error anywhere. Anyone know what it is? Or
have some ideas about the problem?

I don't know about an Event Loop for this purpose, unless there's a
high-level design decision to run everything through a common handler.
Sorta reminds me of v1 days...

FWIW, we use a Screen Loop in one application where the user can
navigate among any of dozens of screens contributing to the data set
of a given entity. Event loop programming isn't required for this, but
common code that dispatches into screen-specific code is.

developing using, 4D Web 2.0 Pack to serve and retrieve data between
the iPhone (3g?) and 4D in an all Mac environment?

Specifically I am researching my options with regards to synching
contacts in a 4D data base and the iPhone. The more traditional option
would be to synch the 4D contact data with Address Book, then let the
iPhone 3G handle the rest. Synching with the Address Book is a
challenge with regard to duplicate entries and one loses complete
control between the address book and the iPhone.

I want to be able to synch directly with the iPhone over the Internet
from 4D. It appears that i should be able to do this by writing my own
Web 2.0 app for the iPhone.

Can 4D Web 2.0 Pack be used instead of rolling my own?

If so would it work with 2004.7 or require an upgrade to v11?

If you're familiar with the concept of a Stack, when you open the Input
form for the subrecord you've added that form onto the Stack. It's "on
top of" the Output form that contains the Tab Control. It's not
embedded in the Output form like the Subform.

Steve,

4D gives you ample developer tools to do this with 4D language. As a matter
of fact, you can mock up most windows in any operating system using 4D, your
creativity and imagination.

One way is to utilize Windows of type 2 or 3 and use them as a "Floating
windows". Once you use these window-types as Floating, they lose their
"Modal" status. Now you can mock up a custom 3D button as the title bar and
enable it to drag around the window once the user drags the button.

You can include mock up close-window boxes, window-shade or resizing-buttons
where you have to accept the responsibility of programming these buttons'
functions.

I have gone as far as flipping the title bar from right to left depending on
the position of the window.. closer to the right side of the monitor and the
title bar would appear on the right...

The only objection you might have is 4D's instance of holding on to the hot
1980s look by insisting on keeping that godawful black border around the
window.

For me, most menu actions (from menu bar 1) start their own process.
Menu action from "sub" menus (2 -> ?) may or may not start their own
process depending on the action(s) involved.

Under these conditions, with everything (every primary window) in it's
own process, obviates the need for a main event loop.
