>>> Do you mean 'syncing', that is, there would be local storage in the
>>> iPhone? Or are you asking about a web interface to a 4D database? If
>>> it's the later, then you're just building a web app and there's
>>> nothing 4d specific about that. ( I've got exactly 1 of those under my
>>> belt, so take that with a grain of salt.)
>>
>> I was thinking of local storage preferably in the iPhone
>> address/phone book. I haven't gotten into the iPhone API yet, but I would
>> think that the API provides hooks to store and retrieve data from the iPhone
>> address/phone book.
>>
>> Using a web app without local storage is not really an option because
>> of the need to access contact information when the phone is off line.
>>
>
> I don't think (but don't know) that a web app can talk to the built-in apps.
>
> You can do local storage in some web browsers, Firefox, IE7. Safari
> will too, one of these days..
>
> http://code.google.com/apis/gears/
>
> But not the iPhone yet.

I found out I mis-spoke. The iPhone browser, Safari 3 and FF 3 all
support client-side storage.
The suer should be created as an 'administrator' user, that is created

Ah. Thanks Josh. But that is even more confusing now. I rewrote the routine
using the IC built msg, and that returns error -11004, which is similar:

-11001 Requested database information does not exist; as confirmed by an
authoritative host
-11004 Name supplied was valid but no information of the requested type
is in the database

So, I still don't know what it means or what the problem is, especially
given that both routines (QuickSend msg and Built msg) work fine on my
office workstation and the same routines work fine with v2003 in both
environments. And what is "database" in this context? One assumes the server
answers back and triggers this error msg. But it is responding differently
because of an "environment" in this case, not because of data or code
differences. In other words, it seems the msg is being sent in a different
way or a different format by v11 when it runs on XP than when it runs on
WIN2003.

I just realized a made a major boo boo here:

Josh Fletcher (4D, Inc.) wrote:
> In your example, assuming you meant to restore [0002].4BK:
>
> 1. Restore backed up log file [0003-0004].4BL (you'll need this later)
> 2. Restore backup [0002].4BK (*ignore* [0002].4BL])
> 3. Integrate log file [0003-0001]
> 4. Integrate log file [0003-0002]
> 5. Integrate log file [0003-0003]
> 6. Integrate the log file from step 1
> 7. Integrate the current log file (databasename.4dl)

I'm off by one. The log file numbers correspond the backup file number.
So if I'm restoring backup 0002, I need log file(s) that contain
0002...then I can do 0003, 0004, etc until the database is current.

Another way to say it is, when you create backup 0002, it creates
0001.4bl because database 0002 already contains the changes that are in
the current log file. The 0001.4bl file is for when you go back and
restore backup 0001.

Two new steps:

1.a Restore backed up log file [0002].4BL (you'll need this later)

2.a Choose the log file from 1.1 when you start 4D.

In actuality, if for 1.a and 2 you put everything in the same folder
(this is the default) it will use the restored log file automatically so
you can skip step 2.a. But if they're not in the same folder you have
to select it.

Sorry about that. That's what I get for going off the top of my head!

Kind regards,

Josh Fletcher
> developing using, 4D Web 2.0 Pack to serve and retrieve data between the
> iPhone (3g?) and 4D in an all Mac environment?
>
> Specifically I am researching my options with regards to synching
> contacts in a 4D data base and the iPhone. The more traditional option would
> be to synch the 4D contact data with Address Book, then let the iPhone 3G
> handle the rest. Synching with the Address Book is a challenge with regard
> to duplicate entries and one loses complete control between the address book
> and the iPhone.
>
> I want to be able to synch directly with the iPhone over the Internet
> from 4D. It appears that i should be able to do this by writing my own Web
> 2.0 app for the iPhone.
>
> Can 4D Web 2.0 Pack be used instead of rolling my own?
>
> If so would it work with 2004.7 or require an upgrade to v11?
>
>

Hi John;

If you do mean local storage, then I notice the new demos for 4D Ajax
framework imply a local storage option.

Thanks for your prompt reply, Josh.

But I am not sure you have addressed the situation I am encountering.
I understand the concept of stacking forms. And I do not expect to see
the output tab controls on the input form. However, when the input form
is
accepted/canceled and the output form revealed, the tab control that was

on the output form is gone.

1) Output form displayed with tab control
2) Double click record to modify/double click empty row to add record
3) Input form displayed
4) Accept/cancel record modification
5) Output form displayed again -- without tab control

If I have some time this PM I will try this on some new, test forms.
It may be some sort of fluke associated with this DB.
But it is rather surprising behavior and I do not think it is
intentional.
Any thoughts...?

Do step 3. Change "integrate" to "choose" of that makes more sense.

>> 3. Integrate log file [0003-0001]

> (B) - What is the .4BL exactly?

A backed up log file (as stated in step 1). I apologize if I wasn't
being clear about this.

> - Is it a copy of the current log file in use at the moment of the
> backup?

Yes.

> - Why is it a different format than the .4DL ("B" vs "L"), a format
> that cannot be used during integration?

It has been "backed up". Yes, it is different, that's why you need to
restore it first in step 1.

Nope, my questions remain open...

(A)
You did not answer the crucial question of what log file to use when first launching a restored database. Look between your steps #2 and #3.

>1. Restore backed up log file [0003-0004].4BL (you'll need this later)
>2. Restore backup [0002].4BK (*ignore* [0002].4BL])

2.1 Open restored structure and data files with 4D Server.
2.2 4D Server demands opening or creating a log file.
2.3 ???? What do I do?

>3. Integrate log file [0003-0001]
>4. Integrate log file [0003-0002]
>5. Integrate log file [0003-0003]
>6. Integrate the log file from step 1
>7. Integrate the current log file (databasename.4dl)

Creating a new log file is unappealing. That means waiting another half hour wait while 4D Server invokes another backup cycle to activate the new log.

(B)
- What is the .4BL exactly?
- Is it a copy of the current log file in use at the moment of the backup?
- Why is it a different format than the .4DL ("B" vs "L"), a format that cannot be used during integration?

I really liked the demo. I hope the developer community takes a moment to
check out the demo. Nice work... it's good to see you guys working on
making it better.
> You might want to check out the new Ajax demo released today. Not only does
> it show a wonderful web app, but also how to access (read/write) the same
> data using an iPhone/iPod Touch. And finally runs the same application as a
> Rich Internet Desktop sans browser app using Adobe AIR.
> it is to develop apps like this with 4D Ajax Framework <
>> Last I checked 4D is in the business of providing solutions to
>> developers, how many engineers Apple sunk in to this? who cares! This
>> is the direction of where things are going and a pretty awesome
>> example to tell a 4D engineer what really gets your blood flowing...
>> When a big company like Apple throws its weight behind a particular
>> standard and starts using it for its own products, you may want to
>> take notice.
>>
>> Hopefully 4D is looking at this and getting ideas.

You might want to check out the new Ajax demo released today. Not only
does it show a wonderful web app, but also how to access (read/write)
the same data using an iPhone/iPod Touch. And finally runs the same
application as a Rich Internet Desktop sans browser app using Adobe
AIR.

<http://demo.4d.com:8081/demos/wow/personal_planner.html>

Regards

Brendan

PS: To see more you could simply go here for more explanations of how
easy it is to develop apps like this with 4D Ajax Framework <http://demo.4d.com:8081/
>

PPS: It also works even when the browser goes offline :-)
> Last I checked 4D is in the business of providing solutions to
> developers, how many engineers Apple sunk in to this? who cares! This
> is the direction of where things are going and a pretty awesome
> example to tell a 4D engineer what really gets your blood flowing...
> When a big company like Apple throws its weight behind a particular
> standard and starts using it for its own products, you may want to
> take notice.
>
> Hopefully 4D is looking at this and getting ideas.

Thank you for sending that. It handles the keyboard inputs very nicely.

The other issue to tackle, is the right mouse click that displays the
process list. Contextual click and Right mouse are used with the On clicked
form event - anyone know if there is an analog for On event call?

The only other option, as I see it, is to put code in the Form method for
each output layout. Since this has 75 OPL's and 0 of them have a form
method, I think it make sense to avoid an hour of pasting in a new form
method.

On another tack - how are others of you handling this issue (pardon the
pun)? Are you using event handlers, form methods, whatever?

I don't know about an Event Loop for this purpose, unless there's a
high-level design decision to run everything through a common handler.
Sorta reminds me of v1 days...

FWIW, we use a Screen Loop in one application where the user can
navigate among any of dozens of screens contributing to the data set
of a given entity. Event loop programming isn't required for this, but
common code that dispatches into screen-specific code is.
> are obviously
> people using a "Main Loop" event handler. My question is, what are
> the advantages
> of doing this vs letting the startup method end and handling actions
> with menus
> as the user interacts with the program? I generally start a
> separate process for
> a splash screen with a bunch of buttons on it, but it is not in a
> loop, it just sits there
> waiting for button clicks. Is the "main event loop" a misnomer, or
> is it really a loop
> that waits for an action from a screen that closes and re-opens
> after every button
> click? Just curious as to the reasoning here.

I can't give you a direct answer myself, but if you check out our 2008
that correspond to sessions for this year's Summit.
> would be to synch the 4D contact data with Address Book, then let the
> iPhone 3G handle the rest. Synching with the Address Book is a
> challenge with regard to duplicate entries and one loses complete
> I want to be able to synch directly with the iPhone over the Internet

This has been my feeling as well, I was just wondering if I was
missing something. Thanks for the response- I'll chalk the
"Main Event Loop" up as one of those "programming style"
issues.

DKC

>I was shown/worked with a main event loop program Loooong looong ago
>(4D v1 long ago). At the time I think it was the only was to get menu
>activities to function (correctly?). No matter it was the way the
>company's shell was setup.
>
>I didnt really like the idea though, a lot of coding to do nothing in
>my view.
>
>Since then, however, I do not use this style of programming opting
>instead for menu driven (mac roots) applications.
>I generally use Menu bar 1 and a splash screen, swapping menu bars as
>needed for different tasks (list windows, entry forms etc).
>
>For me, most menu actions (from menu bar 1) start their own process.
>Menu action from "sub" menus (2 -> ?) may or may not start their own
>process depending on the action(s) involved.
>
>Under these conditions, with everything (every primary window) in it's
>own process, obviates the need for a main event loop.

If you're familiar with the concept of a Stack, when you open the Input

Steve,

4D gives you ample developer tools to do this with 4D language. As a matter
of fact, you can mock up most windows in any operating system using 4D, your
creativity and imagination.

One way is to utilize Windows of type 2 or 3 and use them as a "Floating
windows". Once you use these window-types as Floating, they lose their
"Modal" status. Now you can mock up a custom 3D button as the title bar and
enable it to drag around the window once the user drags the button.

You can include mock up close-window boxes, window-shade or resizing-buttons
where you have to accept the responsibility of programming these buttons'
functions.

I have gone as far as flipping the title bar from right to left depending on
the position of the window.. closer to the right side of the monitor and the
title bar would appear on the right...

The only objection you might have is 4D's instance of holding on to the hot
1980s look by insisting on keeping that godawful black border around the
window.

Best

As far as a main event loop, I tend to have a separate faceless CRON process
1) In CRON, the last thing that is done is to check when the next cronjob is
scheduled to run. Then the wakup is set accordingly.
2) If the admin or someone else does something that would hack the schedule,
then we wake CRON back up (I usually do this via a trigger for the cronjob
table).
3) The first thing that CRON does is figure out why it is awake and react
accordingly (i.e. something needs to be done, the trigger woke it up to deal
with a schedule change, etc.)
