4D and Time Machine Don't think this has been discussed here, but I have been using Time
Machine for a couple of months now and thought I would start a discussion on the best way to use it with 4D. To start if off, I would recommend that if you are using TM that you do not leave the 4D structure you are working on open, ie. idle for long periods of time like when you go to bed or leave the office. I discovered the hard way that TM will not consider the structure modified unless you actually quit it. At least that is what I believe is happening. Case in point... Yesterday for some unknown reason I had a system crash while I was programming in 4D. When I reopened 4D the Users and Groups had been blown away. No sweat, I thought, just go back in TM a couple of hours and I should be good to go. Wrong! I had to go back 3 days to the last time I actually shut the structure down. I normally would have a full backup done nightly, but I happen to be working off my full backup drive, as my main development machine had a video failure and is in the shop. In any event, it took a couple of hours to get me back to where I was before the crash. Another lesson here is to indeed continue to have your computer do a full backup in addition to using TM. I think TM is a really great utility but it does not replace the need to have a bootable backup no more than 24hrs old ready and waiting. BTW, I don't think virtual OSs running in Parallels or VMWare will get backed up until you shut them down as well. I am not entirely certain if I have diagnosed the workings of TM correctly in relating my experience. Maybe someone else can explain how it works better than me. If anyone else has any suggestions or experience the rest of can learn from regarding the use of Time Machine especially as it relates to 4D, please speak up.
