2 Ph.D. Positions in Biostatistics
at the University of Leipzig
Applications are invited for two PhD positions (2/3 TVL 13) in
Biostatistics at the Institute of Medical Informatics, Statistics, and
Epidemiology at the Unversity of Leipzig in the group of
Prof. Korbinian Strimmer.
The positions may be taken up as early as 1 October 2008.

For those not familar with the German Ph.D. system:
Basically it is:
- 3 years
- involves no or very little teaching
- no courses to take, only research work towards the thesis
The advertised positions are under civil servant law (TVL scale),
therefore applicants MUST be EU nationals (no exception).
The net salary is somewhere around 1000-1200 euros per month
(depending on marital status), with health insurance, pension
and unemployment insurance already covered.
Renting a nice 2-room apartment in the good parts of
Leipzig costs around 300-400 euros per month and generally living in
Germany is comparatively inexpensive. Sharing a room in a student
apartment won't cost more than 150 or 200 euros per month.
