ANIMAL welfare chiefs are investigating the horror deaths of two dogs in the River Tyne.

The animals, both healthy lurcher-types, had their mouths closed with twine and were secured in sacks.

A bolder had been put in each one, and they had drowned.

A member of the public called the RSPCA after spotting them where the river runs through Ryton Willows, Ryton, Gateshead, just before 3pm on Tuesday (Feb 12).

Inspector Tony Jackman, investigating, said: "It was a really distressing sight. These animals suffered a horrendous death.

"How anyone could do such a thing is beyond me."

The dogs, both female, were both cream coloured, with semi-long hair.

One was aged between six and seven years old,the other between three and four. Neither was microchipped.

"We can only assume whoever did this could no longer care for these dogs, and thought this was an appropriate way of getting rid of them," said Inspector Jackman.

"This was a cruel and cowardly act, and we desperately want to find the person responsible."

The RSPCA is now appealing for anyone who saw the animals being dumped in the river, probably earlier that day, or who knows of someone who had two dogs matching their description and now doesn't.

Inspector Jackman said: "We think it's perfectly possible that someone witnessed part of what happened here.

"This is a popular dog walking area. From what we know, we believe it probably happened sometime on Tuesday, and we want to hear from anyone with any information."

The RSPCA's 24-hour cruelty line is 0300 1234 999, and calls can be made in confidence.

I can't understand it myself. Why couldn't these people take both dogs to a rescue, police station, dog warden vet etc..  It does make my blood boil.
