1983 750 no crank
Well I thought I could do it but maybe not...
I took apart my side cover on 83 750 VX
1. cleaned everything.
2. #2 gear ok
3. replaced outer gear on starter (slider)
4. replaced starter with a 4 brush.
5. replaced starter cable.
I have no juice to the new starter and solenoid clicks like a machine gun.
I have 12.5 volts at the battery.
Fuses are good, double checked grounds good.
I took the old battery lead and went direct from battery to starter and got nothing (no movement).
I do not have much hair but I am ready to pull out the rest of it...
What could I be missing?
The gears on the inside seem to line up ok.
When I first put it together I used the old starter and had the same problem so I thought that I had twisted the solder joint off so I purchased a new starter and it did not make any difference.
Checked fuses in fuse box (under headlamp).
Have not turned over using flywheel nut (I have case cover back on).
I did jump across starter solenoid with no luck.
Can i put it in gear and turn the back wheel while it is on the center stand?
It does act like something could be in a bind.
Why wouldn't the new starter try to engage when I went direct to the starter from the battery?
UP Date
I pulled everything apart again and the only thing I could find wrong was the large washer inside was turned the wrong way.
I reassembled very carefully checking to make sure the starter motor gear was engauged with the #2 gear. I turned the flywheel to make sure of no binding.
I tested the starter without the gear and it worked great.
After I put the cover back on I took the small cover off and spun the engine with the crank and I could tell that the starter was engaged because I could hear it and feel it but I looked before I put the case on and the gears were not engaged. Must be sliding the cover on engaged the gears.
Still not turning over....solenoid clicking.
Should I buy a new battery?
If I pull the cover off again where should I position each gear before the cover goes back on?

Re: 1983 750 no crank
12V at the battery does not mean it has enough amperage to crank the engine over. So it could just be the battery. If the battery doesn't have enough charge then all it will do is kick the solenoid out and go click click click click click click.
You can try boosting the bike from you car battery (WITH CAR NOT RUNNING! It may damage the bike). If you are really paranoid, take a good battery say from your car and unhook your bike battery and put the booster cables from the car battery on the floor to the bike leads. If it cranks over then you know it is your bike battery. (red to red, black to black)
Bike batteries don't last all that long.

Re: 1983 750 no crank
the charging circuit begins replenishing at close to 3000 rpm..in town its hard to keep it there,,and so your electrical system is feeding off the battery,,,i charge mine before i go out to make sure....two years on anything but the gel battery is about it on life expectancy,,good luck keep in touch yg

Re: 1983 750 no crank
I installed a new gel battery and all I got was a thud at the starter. I guess the side cover has to come off again. I still think it is the gear alignment upon installation. One of the videos I watched explained that he had trouble with the steel slider rod alignment...
Do not know for sure what is causing this problem but I have to get it working one way or the other.

you may need to shim the starter,,i know the early vgos had starter troubles, but there are fixes for them..
