Hi,
First I will try to stay a little more on topic with DVD-Audio.
We have one day's of recording with a fancy pair of mics, a preamp, sent direct to a Pacificmicrosonics (PM1?) 192 A/D converter (to HDD). Let me know an ftp site where I can upload the files and I will confirm permission with Mark.
Second, I have made some of the most complex Hybrid DVD-Audio discs out there, so while I am not intimate with the spec, nor a real programmer, I have edited my share of scripts and have a comfortable knowledge of this process. I am here to help and not sure if I should be pouring through the archives looking for topics to help on.
Lastly, I think the DVD-Audio spec allows 96kHz/16-bit/5.1ch LPCM .bin audio as well (no MLP). Maybe a tool that bit-dithers from 24 to 16 would be a nice addition. This would have a bit-rate of 9.22 Mbps compared to 6.91 Mbps for 48kHz/24-bit/5.1. Not sure which would sound better.
Thanks to all for the useful lcomments about getting HD Audio to the HT. It seems my understanding wasn't too far off.
It should be mentioned that with the PS3's down to around $399 now, you can look at it as a cheap media extender / media server/ HTPC thingy. First, the adventurous can burn their own BluRays that will play all the HD audio formats. Second it is kinda of like the first A/V videocard/soundcard since it can play HD video and audio together out the HDMI connector. It has been devilish to find the limitations of the XMB media player, but I have played 1080p at 25MBps with 448kbps 5.1 AC-3 from the HD and it is pretty. I am trying to find the true limitations of the formats that can be played, but I don't have a HDMI receiver right now. I'm pretty sure I can find a way to mux up MPEG-2 with LPCM, but at what sample rate, bit depth and number of channels. What would be cheaper than this solution, the
TVix : M-6500A in a year?
Here is what Sony say can play:
