Hi,

Just a heads up. I looks like Sun is working on a research java
virtual machine Maxine [1]. it is a very early stage but may be a
useful source of ideas.

Ideas might be all it's useful for, at least for a while.  They seem
to be focusing development on Solaris/x86_64, which seems a pretty
niche market.
JikesRVM does get mentioned in their FAQ:

It doesn't seem to mention what class library they use.  Relying on
JDK 1.6 suggests they use the proprietary Sun one which reduces the
usefulness of it being a GPLed project.
And:

Appreciation for IDEs

as a requirement is rather disturbing...
