In order to perform real tests with XMPP one would need an embeddable jabber server. I once did a quick search but gave up, apparently there's no such beast available *that supports JDK 1.4*.

Maybe we can/should revisit this issue when we have a mixed 1.4/1.5 build in place.

Now that we have the mixed JDK build in place we could in theory embed a jabber server for use in integration tests (similar to greenmail for mail). Unfortunately, the variety of jabber servers written in Java is either unsupported or outdated. The only vivid candidate is openfire (http://www.igniterealtime.org/projects/openfire/index.jsp) but a quick check seems to suggest that embedding this beast will not be easy.
