As described at the bottom of JCR-247, support for predicates on the descendant axis would be a helpful feature, one that we have recently realized we needed with our soon to be in production system, and one that we currently have no workarounds for.

While there is talk of the descendant-or-self axis, the example given is of the the shorthand form of the descendant axis. The descendant axis is supported, but not whithin predicates, AFAIK.
