[Fwd: SCALE Calls For Non-Profit Exhibitors]Hi all,
I just got contacted by SCALE about having a booth this year - is anyone interested in taking the organisation of this on? Eitan, are you planning on SCALing again this year? I had a gem of an idea a while back - rather than take one GNOME stand, it might be easier & better to ask for a GNOME Zone, with a bigger stand shared among a bunch of different projects - we could invite the Inkscape guys (who always have a stand in SCALE), perhaps Akkana Peck to have a GIMP presence, and other GNOME-related projects like those, to create a wider-ranging and more appealing & lively stand than just "GNOME". Looking at last year's exhibitors, at least OLPC and Inkscape might ave been interested in co-organising stand space... add a couple more projects in there and we start to have an attractive space. Thoughts? Cheers, Dave. -- Dave Neary GNOME Foundation member dneary@... Continuing our efforts to promote Open Source software, we invite you to share your work on Free and Open Source projects with the rest of the FOSS community. If you'd like a expo booth for your project at the 7th Annual So Cal Linux Expo, please submit your proposal. The proposals should be submitted in the form of a 1-page extended abstract comprising: 1. The name of your group or open source project. 2. A group or project logo, and contact information including name and email address. (logo needed for publishing on the website) 3. A list or a brief description of the main points to be presented should be submitted. Please include enough detail that will enable the committee to evaluate the proposal. 4. Describe how your participation will benefit both the Southern California Linux Expo and the attendees. Submission formats in text or PDF will be accepted. Qualifying exhibitors will be allocated a booth in the SCALE exhibit hall which will include one 6 foot table, two chairs, one network drop and one 500 watt electrical outlet. As we are attempting to increase awareness of open source software, it's highly desirable that demonstrations be conducted using free and open source software. Re: [Fwd: SCALE Calls For Non-Profit Exhibitors]Sounds like a pretty good idea. Last year we arranged to have the
GNOME booth paired with the Foresight booth, initially because we had nobody else to man the GNOME booth. So we planned on covering it with Foresight guys, but in the end we had some great GNOME dudes show up and run it. It ended up being a pretty good setup, shared some resources and covered for folks when they needed breaks. I bet we could convince the SCALE guys to do something like a GNOME Zone if enough of us are interested in participating. --Ken On Sun, Oct 5, 2008 at 3:42 PM, Dave Neary <dneary@...> wrote: > Hi all, > > I just got contacted by SCALE about having a booth this year - is anyone > interested in taking the organisation of this on? The people I talked to over at Inkscape suggested that a "Graphics Zone" with them, the GIMP, CinePaint, maybe Blender might be more appropriate, and that a "GNOME Zone" would probably be most appropriate for GNOME, Ubuntu, Foresight, and maybe other GNOME affiliated projects if they want space. I'm not sure... seems to me like asking Ubuntu and Foresight to share a stand won't work too well, but that said, we're guaranteed to see lots of GNOME on display... OK - trying to think of apps that might be interested in having a presence and are affiliated loosely with GNOME... Ideas, marketing-list? Banshee Tomboy Gnome-Do Some Clutter Stuff Those are just some things I thought of off the top of my head that might nice to showcase. It would be a good idea not just to show off big name projects that everyone knows about but also some lesser known really cool GNOME-ish projects. Re: [Fwd: SCALE Calls For Non-Profit Exhibitors]What about some of the GNOME mobile consumer? Can we get some of their devices and maybe a person per project and have a GNOME Mobile table or two?

In fact, what I was getting at was something like Abiword - a project that might be big enough to take a stand on its own, but which could group together with GNOME to have a mroe active stand and create a kind of GNOME-branded space rather than a simple stand. And names of people on the east coast to go along with the projects would rock too ;) I agree with you that we should choose certain apps to showcase - we could even go so far as putting some of these on a pedestal, making posters & fact sheets for them, things like that. I'm sure that the Banshee or Rhythmbox ones would be great. Garmin probably won't go for it, since they're not publicising their usage of the GNOME stack, but there's no harm asking. Others who might have interest: Bug Labs (with the Poky based tablets) and maybe Vernier? I could ask, if you like...
