When I started this thread, I was hoping that there was a EAC setting I
could change so that the weird character combos I was getting when I
downloaded track information would be easily converted to accented
vowels. While I suspected that my hopes would be dashed and that a
solution, if there was one, would probably be off-topic for this list, I
had no inkling that it would somehow turn out to be connected to
France's colonialist past.

I'll just go back to trying to get track information from gracenote when
freedb isn't useful. Let's call this topic over.

Thanks to everyone who tried to help.

Best,
Jonathan

I really don't want to be off-topic any more, but who had here written anything about France's colonialist past?

Sorry, I can't see any correspondence. E.g. Hungary never has been a colonialist but there are here "low level citizens" as well. All born Hungarian.

Folks,

I have to agree.  Let's try to keep the discussion at least vaguely related
to EAC, compression formats, and optical drives.
