[Fwd: Meeting Minutes from Monday 10th March 2008.]Addendum (Alexander):
I started working in earnest on the tracker at a time when I was at a workplace where I had a Mac desktop, as well as access to a Mac notebook. And there were several months where I used a Mac at home to handle it while I was unemployed. Under those circumstances the time-consuming aspect of dragging package descriptions off of it and stashing them in a Fink tree were less noticeable than currently--where I either have to use sshfs from a Linux box (my laptop now) or via a web browser under X11 forwarding. A major portion of the validation lag is the use of builds in a clean environment to try to catch missing dependencies, since only a single build can be performed per Fink tree. I've worked up a methodology, using the buildfink scripts, that package submitters or others could run to verify that packages do in fact build on a clean system without disrupting their ordinary Fink tree. If they were to compare with a build on an "unclean" system, that would also help locate non-identicality in the build. A tracking system that could handle large log files could be handy in this regard. The package submitter, or another tester, could submit the log file and save a developer validation build cycle. -------- Original Message -------- Subject: Meeting Minutes from Monday 10th March 2008. Date: Wed, 12 Mar 2008 19:41:35 +0000 From: David H. <dmalloc@...> To: Alexander Hansen <alexanderk.hansen@...> Location: DimDim Meeting Board Attendees: Alexander Hansen, David Hoehn Topic: General purpose meeting between Alexander and myself to determine how we can motivate the community better to submit and help with the tracker validation. Alexander and I agree that using the tracker is cumbersome and that the tracker is actually more of a burden rather than a help. Our idea would be to use something like: http://www.simpleticket.net/?page_id=9 SimpleTicket or http://bestpractical.com/rt/ Request Tracker to offer a better user experience in the submission process. Alexander and agree that we need to actively encourage people to have a look at how they can help with validation: This will be achieved by creating a easy to follow step-by-step list of common things one should do for validation. Alexander has already started with this. Alexander and I agree that we need to counter the perception in the community that Fink is dead and we are not really working on it anymore. This should be done through more frequent communication, which plays into the Fink Blog idea I mentioned in channel. The duration was about 20 minutes, we agreed that we should strive for bi-weekly meetings where we all can come together to discuss matters. Dim dim seems well suited, except for audio issues Peter had. -d -- Sent from gmail so do not trust this communication. Do not send me sensitive information here, ask for my none-gmail accounts.
