[Cooker] unrecognised Dell DVD drive with 2009-rc2

Hello,

I just tried to install 2009-rc2 from CD1 on a Dell desktop pc, and I get
some errors after kernel is loaded and usb drivers are configured (when
the install tries to access the dvd drive with the kernel driver I guess).
At this point the installation fails.

DVD is a hl-dt-st gsa-h73n and the last messages in alt-f4 are about some
I/O errors on /dev/sr0 (Sense : unrecovered read error).

Is this drive not properly supported by current kernel ? Is there a way to
install 2009-rc2 anyway ?

Thanks

Are you sure, the downloaded iso-image is all right? And could there be
some errors on the cd?

The same CD is working in 2 others machines using a lite-on 2410 cd burner
(not dvd). I can reach the "graphical" part of the installer without any
error.

So, this really looks like a hardware compatibility problem with the
install kernel shipped with rc2 and this dvd drive model.

After looking on the web, it seems this problem is present with other
distribs (knoppix, fedora).

The solution to have the DVD drive recognised is to add 'all-generic-ide
irqpoll' to the kernel options (F3 when booting the CD).

The drive is correctly working after.

Should I file a bug report or can someone from mandriva acknowledge this
problem ?

you should filled a bug report about this.
I guess that Adam will add also an entry about this in the Errata.

Also add the output of the dmidecode command in your bug report. With
this information, it might be possible to automatically add the
necessary irqpoll option by default for this machine.
