[Cooker] Mesa 7.1?

Hello

Is there any schedule to update Mesa? I think it's necessary to enable 3D if
using the Xorg ati driver...

Currently, the ATI users of cooker having RV500 or later chip have no hardware
acceleration, because fglrx still don't support kernel 2.6.26. But some chips
are supported by the open ati driver, although Mesa 7.1 is needed to enable
3D acceleration.

Regards

Thanks, Charles.

I've installed the packages, and them work fine.

Nevertheless, I think that is preferable  a free solution, if exists, and we
should test it.

There isn't yet an official Mesa 7.1. And I don't think it will be
compatible
with the Mesa in cooker, so, updating mesa will also require updating X
Server,
and since there is no Mesa 7.1 neither X Server 1.5 yet probably this
will not
be available too soon for cooker.
In the meantime, you can test the xorg-snapshot package, it is in
contrib/testing.

I see from a recent Phoronix article that we won't have 3D support for
the latest Intel chipsets without the new Mesa :(

more things to break ?
It may be dangerous to go for a snapshot of Mesa+Xorg, if we don't
have a stable release of theses ones in time for 2009.0 release ...
At least people can test with the xorg-snapshot if nothing is wrong,
the same for a possible mesa-snapshot. A task-x11-snapshot could be
created to ease the ability to install it to do some tests.

And what about the radeonhd drivers for ATI?
I think radeonhd repository has now support for the AMD 780G chipset,
but the latest official 1.2.1 release does not include it.

Cooker is already using a radeonhd snapshot from 20080729.

I actually update radeonhd regularly with git snapshots, but currently
it doesn't build due to an upstream bug that keeps coming back (this is
the third time). I'm waiting for upstream to fix that before I can bump
it to the current code.
