What I don't understand is that the audio output of vlc is configure through
the  PA vlc plugin; and this works ok on a plain vlc (video and audio) ?
So  soundwrapper should  not be called/required ?

You are correct in saying that soundwrapper is not needed for that
plugin, but some legacy plugins (e.g. realplayer) still use oss...

Thanks Col to confirm; will investigate to-morrow (today now) by setting
different audio output for vlc.

Anyway I have the same vlc settings in 2008.1 (with realplayer 9 firefox
plugin) and it doesn't crash ?

You can try getting a backtrace to see what it is too:

just do:
export LD_LIBRARY_PATH=/usr/lib/firefox-2.0.0.16/
then:
gdb /usr/lib/firefox-2.0.0.16/firefox-bin
 > run
 > "wait for crash"
 > bt

It will probably at least hint as to where it crashes....

/me wonders if vlc uses sqlite..... which is crashing some of his apps
right now.

Sorry for being late; I had no success trying to debug firefox :-(
When mozilla-firefox-bin is started through gdb no plugins are loaded; so no
way to reproduce the crash !
I tried to hook gdb to a running firefox process but i got something like
"cannot access memory  at address xxxxxx" and that i should install
mozilla-firefox-debug package ?
I have to admit that I'm not skilled enougth to help further on this one :-(

Anyway the last line before the crash is still:
/usr/lib/firefox-2.0.0.16/run-mozilla.sh: line 131: 10764 Erreur de
segmentation  /usr/bin/soundwrapper "$prog" ${1+"$@"}

install debug packages and then run this:

mozilla-firefox -g 2>&1 | tee gdb-firefox.log

If you run the command first, it the output should tell you what debug
packages to install (last time I looked).

Debug packages are in separate media so you may have to add new ones
(main/release has debug media debug_main/release).
