I didn't notice this in kate prior to kde 4.0.

But now in kde 4.0 to kde 4.1.1, I've encountered this annoying bug (misleading
name). I never "close" files within kate. I close kate when I no longer need my
files. Why should I close 10 individual files when I can just close the whole
application? Then the recent opened files are not there.

You may call the entry "open recently closed files" ;)
