[Bug 1408] IDLE-Support with libEtPan (since 0.52)http://www.thewildbeast.co.uk/claws-mail/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=1408
Summary: IDLE-Support with libEtPan (since 0.52) Product: Claws Mail Version: 3.1.0 Platform: All URL: http://www.rfc-archive.org/getrfc.php?rfc=2177 OS/Version: All Status: NEW Severity: enhancement Priority: P3 Component: Folders/IMAP AssignedTo: claws-mail-users@... ReportedBy: aklitzing@... I wanted to request IDLE-Support for IMAP since the new version of libEtPan supports it (see bug #22). I don't like to poll every X minutes Y folders on server to check if a mail arrived. I like to see a real-time notify of a new mail in any folder (server-side filtering). I often have claws-mail in background and my mail-checker (gnubiff with IDLE-Support) notifys a new mail in my INBOX. It would be nice if the mail is already in INBOX in claws-mail, too. Without to check the folders in claws again. Thanks! colin@... changed: What |Removed |Added ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Status|NEW |RESOLVED Resolution| |WONTFIX ------- Comment #5 from colin@... 2008-07-05 15:52 ------- -- Bugzilla database cleanup -- Hi, It looks like nobody has been interested in implementing this feature since the end of 2007; in order to clean up the bugzilla, I'm marking this WONTFIX. Features in Claws Mail get implemented on a developer-interest basis: if one of the core developers codes a feature, or if an external contributor provides a good patch, the feature gets added. If the feature interests nobody with coding abilities, although it seems nicer to leave old requests lingering in Bugzilla and let the submitter hope the feature will be added someday, it's more honest (and cleaner) to close them as WONTFIX. -- Configure bugmail: http://www.thewildbeast.co.uk/claws-mail/bugzilla/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are the assignee for the bug, or are watching the assignee. --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: claws-mail-users-unsubscribe@... ------- Comment #8 from colin@... 2008-10-07 13:31 ------- (In reply to comment #7) > I will offer 30¤ to someone that makes a patch to add this to claws I'm not sure whether offering bounties to motivate developers is a good idea or not. It seems like a good idea, at first sight, but this could well end badly for the project, where no one does anything without getting paid for it. I do think that'd be unhealthy. And a 30¤ bounty has the second disadvantage of being mildly insulting -- that covers at most 2 to 3 hours of work at a correct wage. So all in all, I don't think bounties are a good idea :) -- Configure bugmail: http://www.thewildbeast.co.uk/claws-mail/bugzilla/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are the assignee for the bug, or are watching the assignee. --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: claws-mail-users-unsubscribe@... I somewhat disagree. People need motivation. Money is a great motivator. > And a 30¤ bounty has the second disadvantage of being mildly insulting -- that > covers at most 2 to 3 hours of work at a correct wage. Obviously, you would have a much better idea of the time frame we are talking about here. However, if the job only took 10 minutes, not hours, the pay scale would be quite attractive. > So all in all, I don't think bounties are a good idea :) I believe the problem here is with the word "bounty". If we change it to "inducement" or something similar, I think it would be more palatable. ------- Comment #10 from paul@... 2008-10-07 14:17 ------- Why offer cash to a potentially one-time developer when there are several people who have given up extended periods of their life for this project? ------- Comment #11 from hoa@... 2008-10-07 14:21 ------- Hello, A useful implementation of IDLE is more than 10 minutes, even using libetpan. It seems that developers of claws mail have other priorities but you already know this. Even with IDLE, the mail application will poll every 30 minutes. For information IDLE is being deprecated by IMAP NOTIFY since IMAP IDLE is not sufficient. I will consider it a loss of time to implement IMAP NOTIFY (but that's my own opinion). ------- Comment #12 from colin@... 2008-10-07 14:22 ------- (In reply to comment #9) > I somewhat disagree. People need motivation. Money is a great motivator. Yes, and that's why we go to work every day :) But I doubt any amount of bounties or inducements would allow any of us to earn a living out of Claws, which means that if money replaces the fun, Claws Mail would essentially be dead. Re: [Bug 1408] Re: IDLE-Support with libEtPan (since 0.52)Hi again
Please dont get me wrong, i already donate to claws devs and the bounty was to try to catch any new developer, not really to the core devs, as they already said they didnt want to do it. Of course, my previous donation had no strings attached, other than to say "Thanks". :) As for the value, i have totally no idea the amount of work required, but as it is already in the libetpan, i was guessing it would not be a big work :) i was also expecting other to pull forward and increase the bounty ;) i may not even need this feature, i'm just looking for a way to my work exchange server to not drop the connection... in the exchange, it takes a LONG time to authenticate and even with with auto-check in 1 minute, it keeps disconnecting...its very annoying to wait for the re-logon to be able to read a email i suspect a problem in exchange (as even with the noop, the exchange disconnects), and AFAIK, IDLE enables a keep-alive in the imap connection, so i would hope that would solve the problem... i dont really want the new email notification, i just want to keep connected :) by the way, i dont believe in instantaneous new email notification, email is not IM and even local mail servers take a moment to deliver email... a sane server will cope with polling every few minutes... Sadly, exchange is not one sane server, but that is exchange owners problem, if they dont like it, dont buy exchange... or buy more hardware to cope with the load. my work exchange server would be dead 2 years ago if someone had the decency to ear me ;) thanks higuita -- Naturally the common people don't want war... but after all it is the leaders of a country who determine the policy, and it is always a simple matter to drag the people along, whether it is a democracy, or a fascist dictatorship, or a parliament, or a communist dictatorship. Voice or no voice, the people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is tell them they are being attacked, and denounce the pacifists for lack of patriotism and exposing the country to danger. It works the same in every country. -- Hermann Goering, Nazi and war criminal, 1883-1946 |
