Summary: specific mp3 file makes every xine-powered app crash
           Product: xine-lib
           Version: unspecified
          Platform: Other
        OS/Version: Linux
            Status: UNCONFIRMED
          Severity: normal
          Priority: P3
         Component: Core / Backend
        AssignedTo: xine-bugs@...
        ReportedBy: zeph7r@...

Created an attachment (id=72)

amarok output in the console. The crash occurs at the glibc line

I found out this files made amarok and kaffeine crash. This only happens with
the xine engine enabled; if I use gstreamer everything plays fine.
As I couldn't find anything out of ordinary with the files that cause this
crashing, I simply attach them to this bug post.

I have the same problem. My backtrace is very similar and I am also using
gentoo. It looks like there was some update to the tree that broke this.
Perhaps it is some sort of locale issue?

I found out that version 1.1.8 is NOT affected by this so downgrading to it
fixed it for now.

Version 1.1.13 and version 1.1.14 ARE affected.

I have the same problem. Someone on the gentoo bugtracker
(http://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=231974) posted an mp3 that can be used
to reproduce the error.

There seems to be a problem with comment-tags that only contain separator
chars. If I disable the call to meta_info_chomp in xine-engine/info_helper.c,
the file plays fine.

With the patch proposed in Gentoo's bugtracker:
http://bugs.gentoo.org/attachment.cgi?id=161418 I still get a crash in Amarok.
Does anyone have a better idea?

Could people seeing the bugS (yes, plural; I think that there are two separate
bugs here) check current hg?

The one for which this report was originally made is fixed, IIRC, by changeset
7628777305de (a logic error in the rawdv demuxer code); this bug report just
wasn't closed. The other one is unreproducible here.

Which is the one that cannot be reproduced? Maybe there are more than two
issues.

I compiled xine-lib from current hg and ran xine on the mp3 that was posted on
the gentoo bugtracker
(http://www.cs.berkeley.edu/~brho/emperor_01_intro-crash.mp3) and xine still
crashes.

As I said in my previous comment, the problem with this file seems to be an id3
tag that only contains separator characters. This can easily be reproduced by
either using the mp3 posted above as a test file or changing any tag in any
file into a sequence of spaces.

That's why I posted a dirty hack on the gentoo bugzilla
(http://bugs.gentoo.org/attachment.cgi?id=161418&action=view) to discard these
tags in _x_meta_info_set_generic in info_helper.c because I have no idea where
the tags are being read again in the xine-code.

It's the assertion failure which was unreproducible, though I was testing on
amd64. It turns out that it *is* reproducible – on i386.

Anyway, I've just spotted the error: size_t is unsigned, and we have a test for
>= 0; using ssize_t instead fixes it. Changeset 803b99d8a4b8 contains the fix.

However, this doesn't explain why it's working on amd64 :-|
