[Apcupsd-users] apcupsd project managementHello,
I imagine that like me, most of you have been impressed with Adam's knowledge of the apcupsd, usb, and the kernel (among other things) as well as his patience and willingness to take the time and effort to help apcupsd users resolve their problems. He has also made some important structural modifications to apcupsd all the while being extremely prudent in what changes he made and how he made them. With that in mind, it seemed to me that it was time that Adam had the "authority" commensurate with the responsibilities he has assumed. As a consequence, I asked him if he would be willing to accept the role of being the apcupsd project manager. I am very pleased to inform you that Adam accepted :-) Just so that there is no confusion: it isn't a question of me leaving the project. I plan on continuing as I have been doing for quite some time now in a "advisory" role. In addition, I have a number of modest projects that interest me a lot. So the bottom line is that I don't see any major changes on the horizon ... I convey my best wishes to Adam in his new responsibities as apcupsd project manager. -- Best regards, Kern ("> /\ V_V ------------------------------------------------------- This SF.Net email is sponsored by: Power Architecture Resource Center: Free content, downloads, discussions, and more. http://solutions.newsforge.com/ibmarch.tmpl _______________________________________________ Apcupsd-users mailing list Apcupsd-users@... https://lists.sourceforge.net/lists/listinfo/apcupsd-users |

While I've mainly a lurker here and don't use the more advanced stuff which has been added lately (like USB support as I have older serial-only units right now), I have been impressed with the quality of Adam's work and his postings to these lists. Re: [Apcupsd-users] apcupsd project managementCongratulations, Adam.
Thanks to your help (and Kern's), we are happily using apcupsd in several environments. Thanks for the kind words and for your confidence. A little history... In December 2003 I submitted my first patch for apcupsd, a rather broken little number that attempted to help apcupsd's USB driver cope with the linux-2.6.0 test kernels. Kern responded, interested that I had found a workaround, but asking for an explanation of exactly *why* it worked. Of course, I didn't have one. Kern encouraged me to dig deeper, and a few days later I found the source of the problem: a bug in the kernel. I prepared a patch for the kernel and also a clean workaround for apcupsd. Kern committed my apcupsd patch immediately and the kernel patch went in for 2.6.1. Everyone lived happily ever after. Well, sort of. Folks ran into other USB problems and I helped track them down. As time went on I learned more about the rest of apcupsd and started answering general questions as well. Why relate all this? As a warning to other F/OSS project contributors. Watch out. These projects can get stuck in your head and before you know it, you'll own the thing. At least as much as anyone ever "owns" a F/OSS project, which is to say not at all. :) Joking aside, I'm very excited about taking on the role of apcupsd project manager. In spite of our relatively low profile, apcupsd is a crucial tool deployed in data centers around the world. We average about 10,000 downloads for each release, even those containing only bug fixes. We support dozens of APC models using a myriad of cables and interfacing technologies on over 20 operating system platforms. All of this with little to no hardware documentation. So where do we go from here? The project management transition should be largely transparent to users. Kern and I have discovered that we have very similar outlooks and "taste" when it comes to design decisions. As he said, Kern himself will remain on the project to work on features that interest him and to provide guidance and insight as I get my sea legs. Thanks to the community for your support of the apcupsd project and my work in particular. The show of support following Kern's announcement has been truly gratifying. I hope you'll all join me in thanking Kern for his dedicated leadership over the years. Apcupsd is in such good shape today largely due to his tireless effort.
