16th International Smalltalk Joint Conference - Call for Contributions

August  25-29, 2008 - Amsterdam, the Netherlands

For the past 16 years, the European Smalltalk User Group (ESUG) has  
organised the International Smalltalk Conference, a lively forum on  
cutting edge software technologies that attract people from both  
academia and industry for a whole week. The attendees are both  
engineers using Smalltalk in business and students and teachers using  
Smalltalk both for research and didactic purposes.

As every year, this year's edition of the largest European Smalltalk  
event will include the regular Smalltalk developers conference with  
renowned invited speakers, a Smalltalk camp that proves fruitful for  
interactions and discussions. Besides, this year will be held the 4th  
edition of the Innovation Technology Awards where prizes will be  
awarded to authors of best pieces of Smalltalk-related projects.

You can support the ESUG conference in many different ways:

    * Sponsor the conference. New sponsoring packages are described at http://www.esug.org/supportesug/becomeasponsor/
    * Submit a talk, a software or a paper to one of the events. See  
below.
    * Attend the conference. We'd like to beat the previous record of  
attendance (116 people at Köthen, Germany in 2004)!

aura lieu cette année à Amsterdam : ce peut être la présentation
d'outils écrits en Smalltalk, mais également des descriptions
d'expériences.

oui, ça je l'ai bien lu... mais, désolé d'être aussi dense, ça ne me dit
pas comment est organisée la conférence du point de vue des intervenants
extérieurs, ce que je suis sensé transmettre comme documents ou
programme si je ne me déplace pas, et dans quelles conditions je suis
accueilli voire hébergé si je me déplace, etc..

sans un minimum d'information de ce genre, je suis très peu motivé pour
remplir un formulaire :)

Excuse moi en effet, c'est vrai que lorsque l'on est jamais venu à
'lESUG. On ne sait pas trop à quoi s'attendre ;-)

La conférence dure du 25 au 29 août à Amsterdam. Elle est précédé de 2
jours de Camp Smalltalk, où des développeurs se retrouvent pour
participer des développements open-source. Normalement l'inscription
est de l'ordre de 400 euros (comme l'an passé) et comprend les repas
de midi, les pauses cafés, un t-shirt, des CDs. Le Camp Smalltalk est
gratuit. Pour l'hébergement il y a aura une liste d'hôtels je pense.

Les présentations sont de l'ordre de 20 à 30 minutes avec des
transparents et éventuellement une démonstration. A priori c'est
toujours mieux de venir, même s'il est toujours possible de trouver
quelqu'un pour faire la présentation. Ce qui très intéressant à
l'ESUG, ce de discuter avec d'autres Smalltalkiens et de voir leur
code. C'est toujours très enrichissant et stimulant.

Technology Awards" qui récompensent les meilleurs produits Smalltalk :

L'an passé il y avait des prix de 500, 300 et 200 euros. La présence
n'est pas obligatoire. Dans ce cas, il faut prévoir une démonstration
et trouver quelqu'un pour la faire.

on cree un lieu avec plein de gens qui montrent des trucs et codent
et discutent et echangent beaucoup.

la raison est triste et banale: l'inscription et le séjour sont bien
trop chers pour moi (disons que j'ai d'autres priorités pour ce genre de
budget), donc il faut que je fasse faire une présentation par quelqu'un
d'autre (dans le cadre des Awards si j'ai bien compris). or cela demande
que muO soit mieux documenté et un peu plus poli, car c'est un système
complexe et assez déroutant au premier abord... ce n'est donc pas pour
cette année, CQFD :)

il y a un précédent qui me fait penser cela: en 2002, des japonais m'ont
demandé l'autorisation d'inclure GéoMaestro à une exposition interactive
à Tokyo. évidemment j'ai dit oui, on a préparé ça par email pendant
quinze jours, et je leur ai aussi fait un petit programme de démo
spécifique. ils ne parvenaient toujours pas à utiliser le système... et
finalement, sur leur invitation, j'ai du y aller (ce qui a été très
sympa d'ailleurs)

muO est plus convivial que GéoMaestro, surtout pour un squeaker, mais
tout de même je ne pense pas pouvoir charger quelqu'un d'autre que moi
de le présenter dans son état actuel

C'est dommage car je pense que ca mériterait une présentation à la
conf et l'an prochain une participation aux awards (quoique possible
aussi)... Après je comprends l'argument financier... C'est pas évident
quand on est pas du milieu universitaire... Mais vraiment ca pourrait
être sympa, c'est dommage...  Est ce juste l'argument financier ou le
fait que ce soit fin aout aussi ?

Ouais, je comprends.

Si cela te branche et si tu es sur Paris, on peut essayer de se voir
pour préparer une démo de mu0 pour les Awards.
J'avais l'intention de le tester mais pas encore eu le temps de le faire ...
