Hello team,

while we are waiting for the NetBeans 6.5 Beta I would like to ask you for review of documentation that is either new or was written for NetBeans 6.0/6.1. Now we would like to know if the tutorials are compatible with NetBeans 6.5 user interface and that objectives of the tutorials are achievable without problems.

We have created a Wiki page [1] listing all documentation that needs such review. No matter if you want to learn something new or you have enough experience in a specific technology and just want to verify that our tutorials are good. Please select some tutorial, put your name into "Reviewer" cell to let others know that you are reviewing it and once you finish your work put the 6.5 OK icon there. If you have some feedback, send it to responsible Docs writer mentioned in the last column and CC: me. Each review is worth 5 CAT points! :-) And please don't take more than 1 tutorial at a time.

Thanks for your help with documentation review!
-Jirka

Hi Jirka,

Although it might be too much noise for others, I'd recommend sending
reviews here so people will know about their progress without having
to go to the Wiki and check it out themselves. It spurs more
discussion about the reviews and encourage others to do so when they
notice it's not that hard. Deal?

OK, makes sense provided people send 1 post per 1 reviewed tutorial.

Thanks for your understanding,
-Jirka

Excellent. One more change, as of now only a single reviewer is
assumed for a single article, but I think it should not be limited to
only one reviewer. There should be as much reviewers as possible as
many eyes can bring more perspectives on the same issue and eventually
the articles get better style and communication techniques. WDYT?

OK, if Varun (our Community Docs Contributions Coordinator) agrees then I have no problems with this as well. :-) Just put your names in the "Reviewer" cell separated by "," comma e.g.: "Jacek Laskowski, Varun Nischal".

However, please focus on not-reviewed tutorials first! There is no point in having 1 short tutorial reviewed by 10 people and the complex ones left untouched...

Thanks for your help,
-Jirka

Jirka,
If I remember correctly, Patrick Keegan is QE for NetCAT Docs Review, right? Don't we need permission from him, as this was just my point of view.

Thanks

I don't think my permission is necessary, but I will offer a few points:

*I agree that having multiple reviewers is a good thing.
*The first review of a tutorial (that first determines whether the
tutorial works or not) is most important.
*Secondary reviews are great when there are detailed comments about how
things might be made clearer.

Regarding the Developing JAX-WS Web Service Clients tutorial:

Currently, the tutorial is not compatible with 6.5.

Here are the pertinent details...

Section :: Creating the Client

# 1 -- The tutorial secifies "make sure that you specify an appropriate
server as your target server" which was valid on the 6.0 and 6.1
dialogs; however, this is no longer an option on the first dialog.
Additional information needs to be specified regarding the dialog field
"Use Dedicated Folder for Storing Libraries", and the second page of the
wizard dialog detailing the Server and Settings information.

<continuing, assuming the defaults are sufficient>

#2 -- The Tutorial says "click Proxy Settings".  It should say "click
Set Proxy"
The Tutorial says "specify the URL to the web service" with a Web
application URL (HTML PAGE).  It needs to say "specify the WSDL URL for
the web service" with the WSDL URL.

<continuing, assuming the defaults are sufficient>

#4 -- After clicking "Finish", we are unable to complete the tutorial
due to an error importing the WSDL.  It appears that the URL provided in
the application is not a WSDL url, but instead is a full application URL

At this point, we can not continue the tutorial.

Regarding the Getting Started with JAX-WS Web Services tutorial:

Currently, the tutorial is not compatible with 6.5.

Here are the pertinent details...

Section :: Choosing a Container

# 3 -- There needs to be an additional line indicating "Click Next"
before dealing with the container information in step 3.

Section :: Creating a Web Service from a Java class

Graphic following # 2 should be updated due to designer changes.

Section :: Adding an Operation to the Web Service

# 2 -- The tutorial identifies a "Return Type drop-down list."  The new
dialog doesn't use a drop-down list here.

Section :: Client 1: Java Class in Java SE Application

Attempts in step #5 to generate the web service client result in exceptions.

We are unable to complete this section due to exceptions generated
during step # 5.

Section :: Client 2: Servlet in Web Application

# 1 The tutorial indicates the user needs to click "Finish".  "Finish"
is deactivated at this point and requires a "Next" click before "Finish"
is enabled.

Attempts in step # 4 to generate the web service client result in
exceptions.

We are unable to complete this section due to exceptions generated
during step # 4.

Section :: Client 3: JSP Page in Web Application

Attempts in step # 4 to generate the web service client result in
exceptions.

We are unable to complete this section due to exceptions generated
during step # 4.

Eric,
Do you still have a log of the exceptions, so I can forward them to the

Jeff, Jaroslav, et al.,

The exceptions are all duplicates of
http://statistics.netbeans.org/analytics/detail.do?id=80944 according to
Issuezilla.

It is also documented as
http://www.netbeans.org/issues/show_bug.cgi?id=141411 which is already
set to P1.
