[65cat] [news] NetCAT Status Report - 1.

Hello team,

this is the first issue of regular report I am going to compile every week. It will contain major achievements, important announcements, favorite bugs etc. from the previous week to give an update to those of you who were for example on vacation, busy etc.

1. *Current status*

NetCAT program took off smoothly with average daily activity: ~79.3 e-mails and ~38.8 bugs per day. Frankly, the traffic is overwhelming. :-) It would be great if you focus your NetCAT testing on the _development builds_ until NetBeans 6.5 Beta is released. Besides, please make sure you use appropriate _prefix_ in subjects of your e-mails to simplify filtering of e-mails.

2. *Important stuff*

   * Due to high number of bugs and longer implementation of two features NetBeans 6.5 schedule _slipped for 2 weeks_ and NetCAT 6.5 had to follow this change. *Beta* is planned for August 11th.

   * Several participants expressed that NetBeans 6.5 M1 and development builds feel _very stable_ . On the other hand some _freezes_ were reported. If you encounter the same problem, please generate at least 2 thread dumps [1], file new issue and attach the dumps.

   [1] http://wiki.netbeans.org/wiki/view/GenerateThreadDump

   * Michel Graciano misses "Add Leading Star in Comment" setting of Java editor (#125698) and this regression will be fixed soon. If you don't see your favorite setting too, don't hesitate to speak up!

   * Joshua Juneau focused on Groovy support and provided us with his findings. Besides Zeljko Trogrlic reported P1 about impossibility to create new Grails project (#140098) which is already fixed now.

   * Thanks to all 32 respondents who participated in the _Certified NetBeans Professional exam_ survey.

   * This week is dedicated for _tutorials review_ [2]. Each review is worth 5 CAT points but please *do NOT take* more than 1 tutorial at a time!

   [2] http://www.nabble.com/-65cat---other--Tutorials-review-tt18570421.html

3. *Bug hunting*

   * If you get an exception in the IDE please use "Review and Report Problem" button to file such bugs. Thank you!

   * Anuradha Gunasekara reported P1 issue #140423 (corrupted Projects view) and it got fixed within 24 hours.

   * Glenn Holmer's P1 issue #140629 with 50 duplicates was fixed today.

   * I am thinking of introducing a new NetFIX program for guys like Anuradha Gunasekara who don't bother filing issues but rather fix them! (#140071, #140061) Any other volunteers? :-)

   * The best bug reporter was Saptarshi Purkayastha with 21 submitted issues (only 2 duplicates)!

   * I would like to ask everybody to adhere to _bug priority guidelines_ [3] when reporting bugs.

I wish this page:

http://qa.netbeans.org/processes/cat/65/participants.html

had been updated with the current NetCAT points count per participant.
This would help understanding how many people will be replaced if we
keep the same pace per week.

I am a volunteer too, I would like to fix some bugs I find sometime.

However, for some bug reports or some RFE, I am not sure to hit what the core netbeans developers want because of a lack of feedback. For example, those 2 reports:
http://www.netbeans.org/issues/show_bug.cgi?id=117050  (posted 5 days ago)
http://www.netbeans.org/issues/show_bug.cgi?id=117569  (posted 9 months ago as a 60cat member)

This is great idea however I'd like to point out following things.
1, Legal issues - Author of a fix/feature must sign SCA [1] before his
code can be integrated into the NetBeans source base.
2, Integration process - if you have a fix for an issue then assign
patch [2] to the issue. It will be evaluated by developer responsible
for that area. If you signed the SCA and your fix is approved then it
will be integrated into NB source code. Please, be patient it can take
time before your patch is applied. It's up to the developers to decide
when/if they apply a patch.
3, "wiki page that contain issue list with along with netbeans dev who
assign to issue him self busy with other issue". Uff, another wiki page
to be keep up-to-date. No. Just pick up an issue that isn't STARTED yet.
And write to the issue that you are investigating it. Sometimes you can
assign the issue to yourself. However the reply from development can be
"no, thank you. We are working on it". And it is probably not a good
idea to start fixing P1s ;) try something easier...

OTOH, maybe the NetFIX program will make it easier ;)

regards
Lukas.

All you need to do is to create a patch and attach it to that issue. Please don't wait for anything. If nobody reviews your patch in a timely manner, please contact me and I will talk to responsible developers in person.

The same process here. Bundle your modifications in a ZIP file and attach it to that RFE. I am sure the enhancement won't be that difficult to implement because the download size information is available in the module catalog. Take a look for example at Beta Update Center for NetBeans 6.1 [1] and "downloadsize" attribute of "module" element. Again, if your contribution is ignored let me know and I will ask Jiri Rechtacek directly.

That shouldn't be a problem. I own processing SCAs [3] so, if you sign the printed agreement, scan it and send it to NB_JCA@... I will process it within next 2 business days.

I second this. Start by taking one of those 27 easy-to-fix bugs [4] :-)

Its a shocker! I got 83 points, and that too highest of them all, nice surprise!

Thanks,

Cool, thank you for the time spend to do the count and update the page.

Can you remind us how these points are counted please?
