Driving my daughter to daycare recently, I was listening to Slow Dancing Society's second disk. And in a quiet, drifty piece I noticed a little beat, just a sort of tic-tic-tac thing, that I hadn't noticed before--and I've listened to this disk quite a bit. I happened to look back to the car seat, and discovered that the tic-tic-tac was my daughter, tapping on her teeth with the plastic pen to her MagnaDoodle.

Ever have one of those moments, when you think you hear something in the music, but it's coming from elsewhere?

One more: At work one day, headphones on. Can't remember what I was listening to, but I was thinking it had a cool, steady, heavy beat in places. Just a good solid-but-distant thump. Took the phones off, and the thump was still there. Behind my office building was a place where they do metal stamping. The beat was the sound of a two-ton die-striking press coming down over and over.

Made for a helluva beat, though!

Indeed... one of the "instruments" listed on SPK's beautiful "Zamia Lehmanni: Songs of Byzantine Flowers" album is . . . "printing factory ambience."

a few years back, i was living in a loft space and could therefore play music as loud as i liked and at any hour i chose.  late one night i was cranking pole 3 and thought i noticed for the first time an awesome  chiming sound in the mix.  i was astounded that i'd never heard it before and was really enjoying it.  then i realized that the chiming was my roommate's girlfriend ringing the doorbell over and over.  they had just broken up, she had gone psycho, and was repeatedly ringing our doorbell at like 4 in the morning, haha

i was bartending at the time and keeping late hours.  the loft space was in the middle of nowhere;  no neighbors could hear any music, no matter how loud.  especially not pole, haha
