We just had an incursion from the folks at France's Ultimae label.  They've been putting out some great, down-tempo electronica for years now.

I've got an amusing interview with Aes Dana and Solar Fields on Echoes Monday night, July 14, and some recommendations on the Echoes Blog.
http://tinyurl.com/5ft88h

They produce a brand of ambient music that has its roots in the 1970s space music made by Tangerine Dream, Klaus Schulze and Jean-Michel Jarre. Unlike many artists that fit that description, Aes Dana and Solar Fields aren’t making retro-space music that sounds like it could’ve been synthesized 30 years ago, about the time they were all toddlers. Instead, their music is suffused with contemporary electronica, laptop composing and glitch edges.

I must say I don't go much on this whole post-TD sub-cosmic downtempo-ambient-chill thing purveyed by Ultimae Records, though they do do it better than just about anybody. And I *am* an admirer of the Solar Fields releases, especially the excellent Extended. I have to say, however, that his latest effort, Earthshine, is a tired re-heating of some genre-bound flabby psy-trance tosh that SF must have pulled out from the arse end of god knows what old hard disk of his to meet some kind of release schedule requirement. A definite blot on an otherwise distinguished copybook. In order not to end on a wholly derogatory note, I would add that I Awake's recent "The Core" was a decent exploratory effort.

geez, alan, i thought you tried to be all objective'n'stuff??? ;-)
*sigh*
and just so you know, you were wrong about "earthshine"...(it aint really my cup o tea, either, btw, but i have mad respect for that guy).

Q: With the release of Solar Fields’ "EarthShine," Ultimae saw the first full-length trance release. Is this a sign of what’s to come with Ultimae’s expanding sound or will the primary focus stay within the chill realm?

A: Once in a while we’ll release trance. But our main focus is on ambient and many of it forms. We released this album from Magnus because we love his music and so do a lot of people. It had been played at several festivals nad many people asked for the album. It took a few years for Magnus to do this leap and get this out of his system. We’re all happy about it. But for him as for us it doesn’t mean trance is the path we’ll be trading in the future.

2 wonderful friends of mine are close with the ultimae camp (one just became a label dj for them)....and i can tell you they don't release stuff just to meet a schedule...

Well, Jacob, to take you seriously for a moment (just for a moment, mind ;-)), not only do I not recognise the construct of 'objectivity' as a compelling aim in music writing, but I also see no reason - even where an artist has previously produced only the most fragrant of sweetmeats, so to speak - not to yell 'smelly!' when there is a cheese-y elephant of his in the room, as it were...
You may freely continue to indulge your 'mad respect', but I reserve my right to critical dissidence.

oh, alan....

i think you took me a little too seriously =)  of course you have every right to your opinion (i never said you didn't - that was not the point).  the point was, your shite-talking, however sincere, is bound to get some responses now and again...  and folks (like myself) might reserve the right to respond to you.  no?

c'mon alan...lets go out for beer.  i honestly hope we cross paths one of these days....no bitterness on my end....

pieces,

.jacob
