Dear WJ,

Please post this to the IR group. I was surprised that no one had any
suggestions concerning my Hotmail/plain text problem.

To Josh and the group,

Thanks for the comparative report on filtration for your digital IR
system, I found it quite informative.

I have a larger question for you about IR sharpness - and for the
whole group. Put aside the ethereal glow of HIE, let's talk about
resolution. In my history, I have shot 8x10, 4x5, MF 120 and 35mm IR
film from at least 3 manufacturers. I do not think I have ever seen a
truly sharp IR photo.

Now I am shooting digital IR on a converted Sony DSC-R1 and getting
similar results. Nothing is very sharp. In addition, the Sony makes
flat files which need to be boosted considerably to produce a
pleasant image. When I look closely at a one of my IR BWs, it has
noise and artifacts roughly equivalent to the grain of HIE.

My theory is that all my optical systems have been optimized for the
visual spectrum. None of my fine lenses past or present has the
ability to critically focus wavelengths going into the IR band. Is
there any science to back this up?

Stan,

I have been working with a converted 5mp Nikon prosumer digital camera (R72
swapped for IR blocking filter) and have to agree with you about the lack of
sharp focus.  I think that the inherent focus shift that has always been
prevelant in IR still exists in digital and the microcode is not designed to
address it.

Perhaps if someone rewrote the microcode to address IR shift, it might be
possible to get sharp images.
